This Year (2020)

Games

Ah, Sega's been quiet on that subject, and the fans are seeing magical 3s everywhere...(never-ending SA3 speculation).

New "runners" have been added to the various apps, such as a spy-inspired "Elite Rouge" and a elfish "Jingle Belle Amy." Sega also created a meme of their own in March when they made "Irish the Hedgehog" a "reality."

Movie

The Sonic Movie came out back in Feb (IN THEATERS), making it one of the more successful family movies of the year.

It introduced new characters such as humans Tom and Maddie as well as other surprises. It established new origins for Sonic and Robotnik, and also hinted at Tails. A new song for the movie, "Speed Me Up," was also released.

Comics

The Metal Virus Saga stretched well into the world's own pandemic, with some issues being pushed back in the summer. However, now that's come to a close and a new arc has started.

A spin-off starring the series villainous characters is currently running as well. Artist and "fan favorite," Evan Stanley has taken over as lead writer for the main series.

That's about it.

Is IDW Amy...Amy?

Amy Rose has come along way from being chased and carried away by robots. Character development is a good thing, yet...I don't know how I feel about IDW Amy.

Back when the series was announced I assumed Tangle would "be the new Sally," but it soon became clear that responsibility would fall upon Sonic's other main flame: Amy.

Though Knuckles headed the freedom fighters resistance in Sonic Forces, Flynn never bothered trying to make Knuckles into a leader. Instead Amy became the leader of the Restoration and helped keep people together during the Zombot rein of terror saga. Currently she's helping Cream out, and...let's just say her days of pulling out a hammer whenever Sonic talks to another girl are over.

Amy's crush evolved her into a fan-girl. She did start to grow out of this once before, but then the games flipped her back where she started. Her Sonic Boom portrayal was more mature, but that was literally a whole other world. Still, it seemed to impact her in Forces. And now IDW?

I think that might be the problem? She acts more like Boom Amy than Amy, except Sonic knows about her crush. On the other hand, Archie Amy never really hit the fan-girl faze, usually just being too young yet more mature than her game counterpart...so maybe it's Archie Amy without Sally around...?

I liked the crazy, angry, fan-girl Amy seen in the 2000s and maybe most famously in Sonic X.  Girlish and immature, it may she may not have had the calm of a leader, but that didn't stop Cream, Cheese, and Big from helping her. Amy's peppy and sometimes crazy attitude made her unique and memorable.

Still, I didn't mind it when games like Sonic Unleashed tried to have her grow up a bit. I don't dislike Boom Amy, either, but she seems a bit cynical or judgmental, and that wasn't really a part of her personality before.

If Amy had flaws, it was jealously and a quick temper--neither seem prevalent in IDW. In the comics the only problem she has is second-guessing herself. She doubts herself and then pulls herself together to get whatever she needs done...but isn't that just a bit too perfect? I'd like an outburst here or there, at least, but this version of Amy always keeps her annoyance under lock and key...

I just don't know whether to applaud Flynn for developing Amy into a smart leader (without making her a clone of Sally), or criticize him for changing a character from the start instead of letting progress come on its own (she actually assumes this new role in her first appearance).

Let's not get started on Blaze...

Uncle Chuck--The Legend

In early canon, "Uncle Chuck" was a very important character. A good inventor opposed to the malicious Dr. Robotnik, early works credit Chuck with inventing the "power shoes" (speed-up shoes) and "power rings" (rings).

Of Sonic's relatives, he's the most reoccurring. The details change, but at its simplest, Chuck was close to Sonic and helped inspire him to take on Dr. Robotnik.

Sat Am

In one of Sat Am's most emotional moments, Sonic reunites with his robotized Uncle Chuck and tries to use a power ring to save him. Eventually (in Season 2) they are able to restore his personality and Chuck is able to help them. However he remained robotsized on the outside. It was also revealed that "Charles" himself created the Robotsizer--to prolong life--but "Julian" Robotnik took the design for his own dark purpose.

Underground

Uncle Chuck reappeared in Sonic Underground as a part of Sonic's origins. While his exact relation to Sonic/Aleena is not made clear, it's assumed (via appearance) that they are still related. At some point Sonic met Chuck in his early childhood, and after his adoptive family was robotisized (and his home burned to the ground), Chuck took him in. Chuck taught him to be a freedom fighter, but like his Sat Am counterpart he was robotisized.

"Grandpa Chuck" of Sonic X

Despite relying more on the games and Sonic Team for background on Sonic X, some elements of Western canon leaked into the anime. One of these elements: Grandpa Chuck (Chuck Thordyke). Chuck is Chris' grandfather, rather than Sonic's uncle, and he's a human. However he shares his intelligence and talent for inventing. Over the series Chuck would grow closer to Tails, becoming a role-model with an almost uncle-like relationship to him.

Comics

Uncle Chuck was faithfully adapted into the Archie Comics as Sir Charles the Hedgehog, brother of Sonic's father, Jules (and brother-in-law to Bernadette). Later in the series run, he was restored to his Mobian self, defended Sonic and the others as a member of a council, and helped with the Secret Freedom Fighters (featuring the likes of Sally's brother, Elias, and Silver the Hedgehog).

Following the reboot, Sega created the condition that game characters could not have family members unless they already appeared in the games (such as Cream's mother, Vanilla).  Ian Flynn got creative and brought Charles back with the label "Uncle to Everyone," under the guise that his relationship to Sonic was adoptive (this character was allowed to return because he came from the Sat Am TV show, rather than Penders-written comic characters like Jules and Bernadette).

Despite this, Sonic was shown to be very close to his "Uncle" and Charles likewise tried to look out for Sonic. Over the course of the Unleashed-adaptation, Charles was also revealed as a friend of Professor Pickle. His role in this series, though, would be his last.

Uncle Chuck survived a comic reboot, appeared in 2 cartoons, and inspired another character. Many have tried to mimic the emotional bond between Sonic and Chuck, but the character remains one of the closest to Sonic, even visually. It's a shame the character's gone for now, but who knows? Perhaps he'll inspire someone else...

Dear Archie Fans

An abrupt reboot left many scenarios unsolved, and--as fans finally adjusted to the new world--it was lost too. Again, long-time comic fans were forced to make another adjustment: a world not just missing some Archie characters, but all.

Some have enjoyed the new, IDW series. Others left quickly. Meanwhile the new canon pulled in fresh fans, too.

Good or bad doesn't really matter. What matters is that the Archie comics had a long life. Nearly 25 years; nearly 300 issues in the main series alone. The freedom fighters may not be fighting off zombie hoards like Tangle and Whisper, but they've fought. Robotnik, other Robotniks, evil dimensional doppelgangers, magical and mystic beings, aliens, aliens, aliens...

Meanwhile characters like Scratch and Grounder, Manic and Sonia, Chris and Cosmo, Tenko the Canary--even one from Boom...their time was too short. Archie Sonic was cancelled. But the truth is Sally Acorn and the Knothole freedom fighters lasted a long time, and their fans should be thankful for that.

It may seem as though Tangle and Whisper are getting all the attention. They are. They're new. Even Sticks got attention when she was new. If Sally--or Manic, or Cosmo, etc--had been created in this day and age, I'm sure Sega would be throwing them into mobile games too.

But now the complexity of who the character is (and who the character is owned by) makes something like that harder. As for a comic revival or special, though, Archie characters have an advantage above the others. Many who worked on Archie migrated to IDW, and many of the fans did, too. And the fact that "bringing the characters back" has been suggested by the lead writer is a huge deal, really.

But new fans. They always want the new fans. It may seem at the expense of the old fans. Yet in this case, it does make sense. Even though it builds up, 1 issue a month is a crawl. And just as a mega-man crossover can feel misplaced, a sudden change of pace so early or in the middle of a story-arc could be a catastrophe. And then the archie-conclusion would be rushed, too.

Alternatively a merging of characters and ideas would be overly complex as well. Most of the characters would have to be severely changed to match the canon--those who could be used at all.

Aside from that, the Sonic cast is already huge. IDW needed a few exclusive characters to be the face of the series; They needed to be unique. Combined, and their is little room or time for new versions of old characters. Take a look at the Sonic movie (as an extreme example). They didn't even want to risk "well known" characters like Tails or Amy.

If Archie Sonic--or any other past Sonic incarnations--receive a new story, conclusion, or even a cameo, fans may be appeased. But even if it never happens, fans have to learn to accept the new characters and world. They don't have to like it or read it, but they have to accept that it's a new start. IDW is IDW, not the Archie. Despite some promise, the old comics may never resurface.

At the end of the battle, though, fans of Sally, Nicole, Bunnie, Antoine, and Rotor were luckier than most. Many characters have come and gone in the Sonic series. Who knows if Tangle and Whisper still be around in 10 or 20 years? Still, for better or worse, it's their time, now.

Persistently whining about the Archie comics will not bring them back.

Sonic Forces References

The game celebrated 25 years and also had some callbacks:

Words narrate the events, similar to the date/location given in SA2 cutscenes.

Eggman takes over the world while Sonic is away. This happened in Sonic the Comic and later in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

Eggman also took over in several other continues, but while Sonic was young, not missing.

Knuckles leads the Resistance: a "rag-tag" team of fighters to "take back the planet." This group helps rescue Sonic after his 6-month capture.

This idea may have been inspired by:

  • The (Knothole) Freedom Fighters, generally led by Sally Acorn in Sat Am and the Archie Comics.
  • The Freedom Fighters, founded by Sonic in Sonic the Comic
  • The Resistance, the "underground" movement against Robotnik in Sonic Underground
  • Team Hero, Sonic and his close friends who often fight Eggman in the games.
  • The Resistance, a group of humans that fought the Meterex in Sonic X

Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and the Death Egg all appear again.

This is the second anniversary game where Sonic fights Metal Sonic.

Sonic says to Classic, "it's been generations since I've seen you," alluding to Sonic Generations.

Sonic's box artwork is similar to his art for Sonic Rivals 2.

Many trophy/achievement names are based on games/phrases.

The Avatar's clothing can reflect other characters (such as a Tails shirt with Knuckles' shoes or a chao backpack and Amy's boots).

Omega is broken down/out of commission for most of the game. Something similar happened in 06 as well as Sonic Chronicles.

Infinite refers to Sonic as a rat. This was something the Erazor Djinn often said in Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Shadow kicks Infinite in nearly the same way he kicks Silver in the head in 06.

The Shadow "replicas" mainly serve the same purpose as "Shadow Androids."

Episode Shadow has remixes from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog. A part of "All Hail Shadow" can also be heard when he appears in the main story.

Update: How could I forget?! The US theme for Metal Sonic/Stardust Speedway Bad Future was also remixed! Sonic CD!

Rouge mentions an "intelligence division." This may implicate GUN.

Rouge tells Shadow "do it to it," which was a common phrase in the early cartoons.

Rouge indirectly mentions chilidogs.

Rouge also called Eggman "Rotton ol' Eggman." Even though she used to call him "doctor," I swear she's called him something like that before...

Madonna

Madonna was Sonic's scrapped girlfriend for the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

AoStH

Breezie, who was initially a love interest for Sonic, wears an outfit similar to Madonna.

A Madonna-like figure can be seen in the episode, "The Mystery of the Missing High-tops"

One of Sonic's disguises also bears a resemblance.

Other Cartoons

A random human female is visible in a Sonic Underground episode. This is very odd because Underground doesn't usually have humans other than Robotnik. Though she is colored different, she does bare some similarities in design.

Though visually different, the OVA revisits the idea of a human-like love interest for Sonic.

Chris' mom somewhat resembles Madonna.

Games

Madonna may have inspired Amy's modern redesign (red dress, short cropped hair).

The idea of a human love interest would be revisited again in Sonic 06.

Archie

The character was revived as GUN agent "Madonna Garnet," also taking inspiration from Topaz (Sonic X).

Reference or Ripoff: "snooPING AS usual I see"

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

Robotniks says "Snooping as usual I see," with the "PINGAS" part being used in numerous YTPs through the years.

Sonic Boom

Boom used the line in one of it's episodes.

Archie Comics

The Archie comics mentioned the quote as well.

Conclusion: Reference

"Pingas" is legendary.

ROR: "Bald is Beautiful" (Quote, Archie Comics)

Sonic the Hedgehog 171 "I am"

Sonic Universe 68 Variant Cover

Conclusion: Reference

I'm not sure if this was suggested by Ian Flynn (writer), or if it's something the artist did. But it's clearly a reference.

Sonicomics: IDW Changes...

Info

It's been announced that Evan Stanley (Creator of the fan comic "GOTF;" writer of "The Silver Age" issues/co-writer for "Victory Garden;" and a "fan favorite" Sonic artist) will be taking over as main writer for the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comic series starting in issue 33.

The issue also features art by "fan favorite" Gigi Dutreix ("TMOM" fan comic; co-writer for "Victory Garden"), who will assumingly start penciling for the series more often.

Current writer Ian Flynn will still be involved; it's more of a partnership. However, it is a big step in the world of Sonic comics since there hasn't been a main comic written without Ian Flynn since 2006 (and none "main" in the IDW series).

The success of "Tangle and Whisper " apparently opened the door for more spin-off material. There will be new mini-series focusing on sub-villain Dr. Starline. Written by Ian Flynn, it's titled "Bad Guys." Also, this year's Annual has been given a new release date in June (as it and most of the issues were delayed by the REAL WORLD virus).

Thoughts

I'm happy with the change in writing. Though I don't hate Flynn, as some fans do, I've often felt that others should be involved for a better balance. I also believe that Stanley has a better grasp on how some of the characters act. Neither are perfect, but working together could turn out to be a great idea.

So many...

I'm less pleased with this "Bad Guys" idea. The Sonic cast is large and there are many amazing characters to base a story around. Most probably deserved a story more than Tangle/Whisper, but they were new, very popular characters. It made sense for IDW to show-off it's original characters in a original story.

But Starline? I don't think he's done anything to deserve a series. He's rather bland and lacks the popularity to support him. What's more, the series will deal with "the aftermath" of the Metal Virus saga...MORE OF THE D@^# M@%$@! F*&$!^% METAL VIRUS SAGA?!

Starline and fellow worthless characters (excluding maybe Mimic)

Look, Flynn has managed to make unique stories about villainous characters before. But it's defiantly not the angle I'd choose for the series' second spin-off, and I'm not interested.

Sonic Movie Easter Eggs and References

When I watched the Sonic movie, I managed to pick up on a few of the in-jokes.

So here's a list possible references I picked up on:

Sonic Levels

Green Hill

We see Sonic's old home as the first Sonic level, Green Hill Zone (complete with breaking land-bridges and loop-de-loops). The town on earth is called Green Hills, also named after the level. A bit of remixed music plays near the end of the movie--Green Hill Zone's theme.

Other Classic Stages

Sonic also mentions beaches and other locations, while his old dwelling resembles South (or possibly Angel) Island. The "Mushroom dimension" Sonic dreads has to be based on Mushroom Hill Zone (Sonic and Knuckles). A road sign labeled "Hill Top Rd" is named after the zone from Sonic 2. Sonic also goes to Egypt briefly, where many desert levels have been based (Sandopolis, etc).

Other Modern Stages

It's worth noting modern Sonic levels often mention characters as streets on their city levels, like Blaze RD (perhaps the "Hill Top" idea came from this). Sonic treks to San Francisco, where most of Sonic Adventure 2's locations were based. What is shown resembles many Sonic-city levels like "Empire City." Sonic also visits the Great Wall of China, where the Sonic Unleashed level Dragon Road was based.

Other Game Stuff

Sonic 3

The rings were inspired from the Giant Ring gimmick (the entrance to the special stages from the first game...as well as some of the others such as Sonic 3).

"Hold still you devil!"

"Commander Waters" may be some version of the video game's "Commander." The Commander, who debuted in Shadow the Hedgehog, is the head of the game's good-again/bad-again military, GUN ("Guardian Units of Nation"). Walters, who seems to be in a high spot in the US military, is the one who chooses Robotnik for the job of investigating Sonic (and later, embarrassed, works to cover the situation up).

Sonic's red shoes are similar to his soap shoes from Sonic Adventure 2.

The symbol on Sonic's bandanna is from the start of Sonic 1. Sonic also mentions having "an extra life." Having "lives" is a common Sonic element.

Sonic slowing/stopping time is an ability first used in Sonic and the Secret Rings ("Time Stop"), although slowing time had previously been established as a possibly with Chaos Control. Interestingly, while this is normal for "Movie Sonic," in the games Sonic usually needs a "skill" enabled or outside help before doing the move.

Sonic turning blue could be a version of the boost, while it's electric qualities could be a reference to Super Sonic or even the Lightening Shield.

Sonic also preforms the spindash, his signature move.

Miles Electric in Sonic Colors

Tails has a small device that he uses in his appearance, likely some version of the Miles Electric.

At the end of the movie, Robotnik is left in the Mushroom zone. This mirrored the ending of Sonic Generations where the Doctor was left in "White Space."

Nicknaming Robotnik "Eggman," is something Sonic did nearly two decades earlier in Sonic Adventure.

It's mentioned that Robotnik has a high IQ. Most game descriptions often state his IQ as 300.

One of the labels on Robotnik's break-switches reads "Badniks," which is what his robots are called.

Sonic also mimics parts from the games such as looking at his wrist and tapping his foot, "falling off," and posing like in Smash Bros. The moment when he slides under a truck is also similar to part of the Sonic Unleashed' opening

Sonic wanting a friend reflects the theme of friendship and teamwork the games often mention. This Sonic's origins are also similar to Blaze, who was likewise lonely had dangerous powers. However, she chose to isolate herself.

Tom Wachowski

It's likely a coincidence, but "Tom Wachowski" has a name similar to "Tiara Boobowski," the scrapped character from the scrapped game, Sonic X-treme.

Past TV shows, movies, comics

Sonic with a Chilidog in Sonic and the Black Knight

Sonic eats and seems to enjoy Chilidogs, an occurrence that has been in practically every media since it's debut in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (and in the games' Sonic Unleashed).

Sonic with his guitar in Sonic Underground

Sonic is shown to own a guitar. Sonic playing a guitar has also been a reoccurring gag in many cartoons, playing it's biggest role in Sonic Underground. On similar lines, Sonic was supposed to be a singer in a band in the original Sonic 1, but the idea was scrapped for space.

Sonic shares a dislike of salt-water. In Sonic Underground, Sonic X, Sonic Boom, and in the Archie comics, Sonic was hydrophobic. Others have mentioned that he doesn't like water, and all of these drew on the fact that in the Sonic games, Sonic can not swim, run fast, or breathe long underwater.

"No time for Relaxation"

Sonic says, "Gotta' go Fast," and the unused theme of the movie shares the same name. This are both from the opening of Sonic X, which repeats "Gotta' go fast, gotta' go fast, gotta' go faster-faster-f-f-f-f-faster."

Sonic and Tom running from Robotnik

Sonic is called an "alien" and hunted from the government. This also happened in Sonic X. The idea of Sonic having a male human friend was also in Sonic X first, although Chris was much younger than Tom.

Sonic and Chris "on the run" in the end of Season 2

Complaining, Sonic mentions he doesn't even have any pants, which was a running gag on the show, Sonic Boom.

Sonic sneaks in a bar.

To avoid suspicion, Sonic dons a disguise. This was a re-occurring element in the cartoons that was most used (and used first) in Adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic as a Western Sheriff

A woman mistakes Sonic as wearing a mask, which would often happen in Sonic X (mistaken as a stuffed animal or costume).

Agent Stone with Robotnik

Robotnik has an underling, Agent Stone. The idea of Robtonik having a sidekick or two to do his dirty work has been used through out many cartoons and comics. The concept is also in the game Sonic Unleashed, with a robot who was later remade (as Orbot along-side a new character, Cubot, in Sonic Colors).

Robotnik with his latest "underling," Dr. Starline.

A little girl gives Sonic his red shoes when she was concerned about his feet. This is a reference to early Sonic canon that Sonic needs his shoes because of the intense friction he endures while running.

Sonic in socks

This can be seen as early as Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, where Sonic's feet smoked when he ran with out them. Other sources say Uncle Chuck was credited as the creator of Sonic's "power shoes" and that he created them for the same reason (and/or to make him faster).

"At the plate...Sonic! At the pitcher's mound...also Sonic!"

Sonic plays a game of baseball, ping-pong, and other games by himself. This has been a joke in the past, too. In Sonic Underground, for example, he plays tennis with himself on each side and also acts as the referee.

"I hate it when I'm a sore loser."

Sonic's origin is somewhat resembles his in Sonic Underground:

In Sonic Underground, "Beginings," young Sonic lives with two adoptive parents who tell him to run and not to come back. The two are taken to be robotized, and the house is burned. Sonic runs back too late, but is found by Uncle Chuck.

In the movie, Long Claw--an Owl--acts as in a mother-like manor to a young Sonic. In a bad situation, she likewise tells him to run and not to come back. Sonic does run back, just barely missing his chance to return. Sonic was then on his own.

While I am not sure the real reason an owl was chosen (because owls as "wise?"), it's possible it was a reference to old man Owl from the first "Sonic Movie" (the OVA). There have been a few owls in Sonic before, but I fail to see any other connections.

Several Echidnas are seen as the villainous group that drives Sonic away from his home. While this could be a reference to the game's own ancient echidna clans, even that may have been inspired by the history in the Archie Comics.

Speaking of which, the character of Long Claw may not have been Sonic's actual mother because of one of Sega's mandates: video game characters cannot have family unless mentioned in the games. This rule, along with others, was created after the "Ken Penders lawsuit" (former comic writer making a mess). This isn't really a reference, but a possible explanation.

Sonic zips through many Flash comics, likely a nod to the fact that the hedgehog has appeared in several of his own series. In a short, comedic portion of the Archie Comics, Sonic even appeared similar to the Flash in a joke.

Archie's "Warp Rings" (also based on the giant rings from the games) were very similar to the rings in this movie. They served as a means of inter-dimensional transport.

Sonic has a red race car bed, which must have been inspired from the comics.

The "blind him" move Sonic decides on is something that has been common in many of Sonic's appearances.

Real World

The name Ivo Rotonik came from the US, while Eggman came from Japan. Later these names were combined so that his name was Ivo Robotnik and his nickname was "Eggman."

An old man draws a picture of Sonic, but it's really an image of Sanic, an online internet meme.

Sonic pretends he has a livestream...he does in the form of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" Youtube Channel.

Having Sonic drive (and asking how he knew) may have been a jive at the common question some of the racing games caused: "why would Sonic drive a car?"

[End]

So that was more than I expecting to remember. I'm sure there's more and that people will catch on better when they release it on DVD...

I think it's pretty cool they added so much in and it makes me hopeful for the future. Still, it's hard to image that the same company that snuck "badnik" labels and "Sanic" in their move allowed that first design. I'm hoping they add in something that makes fun of it if they make a sequel.

Sonic and ALSO Sonic
