Best theme for Sonic.

Technically any game's main song is also considered a song for Sonic, such as "Live and Learn," "Endless Possibilities," "Knight of the Wind," or "7 Rings in Hand." However I'm only focusing on themes that are specifically and repeatedly Sonic's (so excluding most of those "game" themes as well as "team" songs like "We Can" or "Sonic Speed Riders" and shared themes like "What I'm Made Of" or "Open Your Heart"). That leaves 3 songs, "It Doesn't Matter," "His World," and "Reach for the Stars."

Background

It Doesn't Matter

The song debuted in Sonic Adventure, returning in the sequel and reappearing in Sonic and the Black Knight. While it did not receive the same attention as the Crush 40 songs, the song is still a fan favorite. There remains three vocal versions (SA, SA2, and the later made S.A.M.E.) and a few instrumentals.

His World

Even though Sonic 06 received backlash, its soundtrack was immune. "His World" instantly became a Sonic-must. Being the game's main theme it received numerous instrumental versions prevalent through out the game. Some of these were also reused elsewhere, such as in Brawl. Three main vocal versions were created: the game version, Zebrahead's version, and Crush 40's version.

Reach for the Stars

"Reach of the Stars" was made Sonic's theme after the good reception to Sonic Colors. The song received many instrumental themes through out the 2010s, appearing in almost every many games released in the Current Era. There is now a second version of the vocal song made for Sonic Colors Ultimate.

Winner

It Doesn't Matter

Actually, I believe "His World" is the best song out of the three. But as a theme for Sonic that reflects his personality and spirit, "It Doesn't Matter" is the best choice. While not worded the best, the lyrics do narrate his point of view. Additionally the genre seems to be a 90s-early 2000s punk-rock mix, which is the best reflection of the character.

The SA2 version was defiantly handled better, but the S.A.M.E. version combines the strengths of each. The Black Knight instrumentals also tamed the song into something quite beautiful (the fan-art music).

Runner-up

His World

"His World" makes a great introduction into the attitude and drama that 06 tried so hard to emulate. The grand instrumentation aside sassy rap and defining lyrics makes it a memorable song.

I think the Zebrahead and Crush 40 versions are superior and less random the original, however. While it makes a grand theme overall, it just doesn't work as well as a character theme. It's also hard to separate it from 06 or others in the game.

LOSER

Reach for the Stars

I can't stand the song. It's a 2010s nightmare. Even trying to set aside my personal disgust, I can't see how it makes a good theme for Sonic specifically. How does "the colors feel so right" reflect him? The song was clearly written with the game rather than character in mind. The genre and vocals seem much more suitable for Silver, and the instrumentation is simply too modern-synthetic to reflect a 90s videogame-icon.

"Endless Possibilities" would have been a better idea since the song is less game-focused (and not to mention it is better by a long shot). "Reach for the Stars" should have been exclusive to Sonic Colors.

Eras Update: Transitional

ALL about the transitional era

Era: Transitional

Main Years: 1999-2005

Gameplay Type: Following Sonic Adventure, the "main" games were now 3 dimensional. The player controlled Sonic or another character, with the end goal not always being to finish the level. For example, Knuckles would instead look for pieces of the Master Emerald.

While the spin dash was still available, the "homing attack" became the weapon of choice. Sonic Heroes combined the gameplay styles of different characters, making them (speed, power, and flight), available all at once. While characters such as Gamma, Tails, and Eggman would use a form of gun to cover shooter based gameplay, Shadow the Hedgehog was the first (and only) to make it the main focus.

However Sonic was not done with 2D side-scrollers, appearing in many handheld titles as just that.

Character Designs and Personalities: Sonic and the rest of the revived characters received new, "cool" and flexible designs. While many "original" fans did not approve of Sonic being taller and suddenly having green eyes, the character with the most changes seemed to fly under the radar: Amy Rose. Amy was given a more mature and radically differing design. This is in part because the original character was 8 and Amy's age was revised to be 12.

While the characters were always thick with attitude, having the characters officially talk led to them having more obvious character traits. Many of the characters had quick and witty comebacks, although only if it fit their character (Eggman, for example, was more formal in his wording, being an adult scientist and not a sassy teenager).

Story Type: Now that scripted cutscenes were normal, the stories become more involved, though the plots still largely at least started with stopping Eggman. Mainly Eggman would unleash a threat only for it to get out his own hands.

In a game on the borderline between this era and the next, Shadow the Hedgehog, Eggman is not the main threat (Black Arms) and was not responsible for it, either (in contrast to Heroes, where Metal Sonic was technically still Eggman's fault).

More characters were introduced, with Sonic meeting much of what is now the main cast. Most of these characters were heroes (Tikal, Cream, etc) or became heroes (Gamma, Shadow, etc).

The handheld storylines were not too complex until Sonic Battle, which contained several story modes. The plot of Sonic Advance 3, while a third "advance" title, is a sequel to Battle.

Visuals: Although there was a good deal of early CG type art, they seemed pretty proud of the 2D "Sonic Channel" designs and art, with the characters' artwork being featured in box art and menus.

The graphics of this era have not aged well, and the mouth animations have contributed to memes. However the creative and expressive openings have been well remembered and in some cases recreated. From Sonic Heroes on, the CG cutscenes became more prevalent and important.

The settings now used real world inspiration, such as with Sonic Adventure 2, which was based on California. Common locations were cities, ruins, beaches, haunted houses, and space.

Music: The music of this era redefined what to expect from Sonic games. Often praised, the music used a lot of guitar and rock, while not excluding experimental or funkier genres.

Starting with Sonic Adventure 2, certain characters became associated more with certain songs, such as Sonic having peppy punk-rock vs Knuckles having snazzy rap and hip hop. This was somewhat echoed with the contrasting vocal themes in Sonic Heroes

Shadow the Hedgehog, being a spinoff based on another character, did not use the same mix in genres, instead focusing on a heavier rock and using the vocal themes as an allusion to the personality. While not as memorable, the music of the handheld games served as a nostalgic connection between "classic and modern."

Voice Cast: From Sonic Adventure on, Sonic's official voice was Ryan Drummond and Eggman (Robotnik)'s was Deem Bristrow. Knuckles' voice changed a bit until Sonic Adventure 2, when Scott Dreier took the job over. Tails voice often changed because his "real-life boy" actors voice would mature, leaving Tails with a total of three different actors in this era alone. Jennifer Douillard voiced Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend, Amy. Lani Minella voiced Rouge (as well as Omachao) and David Humphrey joined in 2001 as Shadow. Jon St. John doubled as Big the Cat and Omega.

In 2003 Sonic X was dubbed in English by 4kids. 4kids used their own voice cast for the series (rather than hiring the current voice actors or anyone from the DiC cartoons). After Sonic Advance 3 (2004), Sega replaced their "game" cast with the group from 4kids because they wanted Sonic to have the same voice in all media (rumors say Deem Bistrow's death was also a factor). This cast would start in the last/borderline transitional game, Shadow the Hedgehog

This is a notable difference than in Japan where much of their cast has been the same since Sonic Adventure

Controversy

Although Sonic X was popular with western audiences, fans of the games did not take well to the sudden switch. In particular fans felt cheated that Ryan Drummond would not be back as Sonic.

Fueling their dismay was the fact that earlier Drummond had actually offered to move to voice Sonic in Sonic X. To make things worse, Sega did not announce the change in 2005 and failed to tell the actor he would not be voicing Sonic anymore. Despite this Ryan Drummond himself does not have any hostility for his replacement voice actor(s).

Main Voice (Sonic): Ryan Drummond

Memorable Theme Song (for Sonic): "It Doesn't Matter" (from Sonic Adventure 1/2).

Memorable Catchphrases (Sonic):  "Talk about low budget flights...I'm outta' here!" "TARIIAAAAA" "That was cool!" (Sonic Adventure2)  "Let's blast through with sonic speed!" "BLAST AWAY!" "It's all over...for YOU!" (Sonic Heroes) "Time to Party!" (Sonic Battle) "YEAH!" (Sonic Advance 3)

"Kids, don't use formula 1 race cars to chase hedgehogs!" "Yeah I've got a name. It's Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog" "Do I look like a cat to you?!" (cartoon)

Cartoons and other Appearances: Often attributed to the modern era, the main cartoon of this era is Sonic X. The anime adapted the Sonic Adventure series fairly closely but Sonic Battle loosely. It also featured many staples of the era like Tails' being an inventor/pilot, Amy having obsessive crush, and soap shoes.

The changes would affect the Archie comics to a point. Humans had to be written in (after years of Robotnik being the only one). Amy had to be redesigned and aged to match her game counterpart. Characters like Shadow and Rouge were introduced. However, as a whole the series proceeded with their own storylines and characters taking priority.

Aside from Sonic Adventure, they did not do much to adapt the games as a main story. Infamously they mistakenly colored Maria Robotnik's hair brown. Also Shadow's chest fur was yellow for 20 issues (give or take).

The storylines during this time would vary greatly. While Sonic's fight to save the world from the Quantum Dial (a deadly weapon created by alien enemies, the Xorda) was liked, the fall-out was hated by fans. As a consequence of it, Sonic's girlfriend, Sally, becomes more worried about Sonic's welfare and subsequently breaks up with him (in a scene harshly criticized as out of character and nicknamed "the SLAP").

Confusingly, with Sonic now single, he shared a kiss with Bunnie, expressed feelings for a character called Mina Mongoose, and started dating yet another character, Fiona Fox (though he was supposed to be with Amy).

This portion of the comics has become something of the "dark era" among fans. The writers were in disagreement about many plots and characters (including the drama of who Sonic should be with romantically). While the series was still lasting, the comic was in something of a downward spiral.

Sonic Adventure Music Experience [SAME] (Album) Review

Details

The Sonic Adventure Music Experience was an event in Tokyo, 2016. The albums includes newly arranged versions of songs from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. There are two volumes.

Summary

Generally the songs seem to be improvements of their Adventure counterparts. Everything seems smoothly put together. Metal Harbor is a good example, sounding less harsh. Chaos 6 seems more like an updated version, even more "Sonic"-y. Keys the Ruin (Pyramid Cave) and Mr. Unsmiley (Sky Rail) are my favorites. In fact Sky Rail seems a little Shadow the Hedgehog-y somehow. I wonder if that was intentional...

Final Ranking: B

They may only be new versions of old songs, but they are awesome.

Sonic Adventure 2 OST Review

Summary

Sonic Adventure 2 is loved by Sonic fans, with many calling it the best 3D Sonic game and the best made in the 2000s (of course, I think those people forget about things like Route 101). It's soundtrack would also gain attention, with songs like "Live and Learn" and "City Escape" becoming inseparable from the Sonic franchise.

The music in Sonic Adventure was pretty good, but at points it seemed divided or unfocused. Sonic Adventure 2 was able to create a harmonious mesh by focusing not just on the locations, but on the characters. This allowed for different genres and styles to coexist but also overlap with in the different types of settings.

Best Song: Rhythm and Balance (White Jungle)

Runner-Up (s): Keys the Ruin, Vengeance is Mine, 3 Black Noises, Unstable World, The Supernatural, For True Story, Supporting Me, Canon's Core Ver 2, Lovely Gate 3, Trespasser, Last Scene, Aquatic Mine, Escape from the City

Took a while to decide, but this one is an edgy, addictive creation. Sound effects give it a wild, "jungle" feel while the percussion even makes it sound like it's raining. Distant lyrics. Awesome drums, too.

Worst Song: Down in the Base (Hidden Base)

Runner Up (s): Rumbling HWY/Mission Street, Kick the Rock/Wild Canyon

This song is extremely catchy, but there's a constant high pitched noise that makes me think my ear is ringing, and I feel like the Tails tracks can be kind of forgettable. Doesn't help that in the actual game the songs are murdered by annoying beeps and shouting.

Best Vocal Song: It Doesn't Matter

Runner-Up (s): Live and Learn, Throw It All Away, Fly in the Freedom

I love "Live and Learn," and it probably should get this honor. But after hearing it so many times, it's kind of gotten repetitive. "It Doesn't Matter" is carefree, confident, 2000s-esque song really matches Sonic's attitude and character.

Worst Vocal Song: Believe in Myself (My Sweet Passion doesn't count)

Runner Up (s): Unknown from M.E., E.G.G.M.A.N.-?

While the instrumentation is fine, I don't like the singing as much. It seemed better in Sonic Adventure and I feel like switching to a male singer may have been better way to change it up and for Tails in general.

Final Ranking: S

Sonic Adventure 2 successfully improves upon the previous title. There's a mix of different music, but none of it is really bad or even out of place. The worst things I can say about it is that some of the lyrics (cough-cough-Knuckles) are cheese and that there's some super 2000s-y songs. However it's still extremely impressive and has heart, earning it's place as one of the best OSTs in the series.

Sonic Forces References

The game celebrated 25 years and also had some callbacks:

Words narrate the events, similar to the date/location given in SA2 cutscenes.

Eggman takes over the world while Sonic is away. This happened in Sonic the Comic and later in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

Eggman also took over in several other continues, but while Sonic was young, not missing.

Knuckles leads the Resistance: a "rag-tag" team of fighters to "take back the planet." This group helps rescue Sonic after his 6-month capture.

This idea may have been inspired by:

  • The (Knothole) Freedom Fighters, generally led by Sally Acorn in Sat Am and the Archie Comics.
  • The Freedom Fighters, founded by Sonic in Sonic the Comic
  • The Resistance, the "underground" movement against Robotnik in Sonic Underground
  • Team Hero, Sonic and his close friends who often fight Eggman in the games.
  • The Resistance, a group of humans that fought the Meterex in Sonic X

Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and the Death Egg all appear again.

This is the second anniversary game where Sonic fights Metal Sonic.

Sonic says to Classic, "it's been generations since I've seen you," alluding to Sonic Generations.

Sonic's box artwork is similar to his art for Sonic Rivals 2.

Many trophy/achievement names are based on games/phrases.

The Avatar's clothing can reflect other characters (such as a Tails shirt with Knuckles' shoes or a chao backpack and Amy's boots).

Omega is broken down/out of commission for most of the game. Something similar happened in 06 as well as Sonic Chronicles.

Infinite refers to Sonic as a rat. This was something the Erazor Djinn often said in Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Shadow kicks Infinite in nearly the same way he kicks Silver in the head in 06.

The Shadow "replicas" mainly serve the same purpose as "Shadow Androids."

Episode Shadow has remixes from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog. A part of "All Hail Shadow" can also be heard when he appears in the main story.

Update: How could I forget?! The US theme for Metal Sonic/Stardust Speedway Bad Future was also remixed! Sonic CD!

Rouge mentions an "intelligence division." This may implicate GUN.

Rouge tells Shadow "do it to it," which was a common phrase in the early cartoons.

Rouge indirectly mentions chilidogs.

Rouge also called Eggman "Rotton ol' Eggman." Even though she used to call him "doctor," I swear she's called him something like that before...

Sonic 06 References/Easter Eggs

Despite being planned as a soft-reboot and wanting to bring Sonic back to his "roots," Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) was a complete failure among fans and new players a like. Though it may not be the horrendous monster everyone seems to call it, it was not the promised "Sonic-Next Gen."

As a constellation prize, the 15th anniversary game still holds many hints at other games, even though it was supposed to be a "reboot."

Notable Reoccurring Elements

  • Invincibility
  • 0 being a life
  • Super Sonic
  • Super Shadow
  • Spindash
  • Chaos Spear (modified)
  • Flying
  • Gliding
  • Grinding
  • Amy's Hammer

Sonic 1

  • The platforms in Spring Yard Zone's boss fight are taken out by Robotnik, and the floor is also targeted in the Egg Wyvern boss fight.
  • The idea of Sonic having a having a human girlfriend originates here; in early plans Sonic had a girlfriend named Madonna.

Sonic CD

  • Time Travel is once again an important element.
  • Crisis City revives the idea of a "bad future."
  • With the purple gem, Sonic can shrink and jump high. This idea is directly from Sonic CD's Metallic Madness, where Sonic is scaled down by a laser.

Sonic 2

  • The main theme "Sweet Dreams" is remixed and put at the credits in Sonic's story.
  • Aside from the game's new characters (such as Elise and Silver), Tails appears 3rd (after Sonic and Eggman), as he did in real life.

Sonic 3

  • Sonic snow boards in White Acropolis, as he originally did in Ice Cap.

Sonic and Knuckles

  • Lava Reef's fiery outside and darker inside may have inspired Flame Core.

Sonic X-treme

  • At one point Sonic's love interest--Tiara--was to be a princess, but that was later changed and the game was scrapped. This may have impacted the ideas for Sonic's new love interest, though.

Sonic Adventure

  • Both games are divided into "stories" revolving around different characters.
  • Wave Ocean closely resembles Emerald Coast.
    • The Orca reappears in Wave Ocean.
  • Once again there are chatty humans in hub worlds.
  • After meeting up with Sonic, Tails says "Long time no see, huh?" while after finding Tails in 06 Sonic says "Long time no see!"
  • Iblis may have been inspired by Chaos, being an element-powered monster that transforms.
  • Knuckles' treasure hunting skills are mentioned.
  • Crisis City includes worn Chao in Space 3 signs; Sonic Adventure started the "Chao in Space" gag.
    • Adventure also had the first Chao Gardens, and there are signs in Crisis City mentioning a Chao garden.
  • Eggman's "battleship" is another version of the Egg Carrier.

Like in Station Square, New City was supposed to have cars. These can be found with the "Shadow New Town" glitch, but they crash into everything.

Sonic Shuffle

  • The theme of Light and Dark originated in this game.

Sonic Adventure 2

  • The "Solairs Project" was mostly likely intended as 06's "Project: Shadow."
  • Flashbacks are used again.
  • Amy mistakes Silver for Sonic, just like she mistook Shadow for him.
  • GUN is present.
  • The president is mentioned.
  • Rouge's treasure hunting skills are mentioned as well as used (in Kingdom Valley).
    • Rouge finds keys to move on; she hunted keys before in Egg Quarters.
  • Sonic rides a metal board in Crisis City, like in City Escape.
  • Sonic can preform a wind move with a gem. Sonic's first wind attack was from this game.
  • Eggman tricks Sonic into giving him the (fake) emerald with Amy as a hostage but traps him. He does the same with Elise except the emerald was real.
  • Canon's Core uses all playable characters except Shadow. End of the World uses all playable characters except Sonic and Blaze.

Sonic Heroes

  • Eggman leaves Sonic a recording, similar to the beginning of Team Hero's story.
  • Amy turns invisible, something previously exclusive to Espio.
  • Sonic "shares" his super state in both games.
  • The version of the wind move for Sonic came from this game.
  • Tails says "My head's spinning!" while going through loops in both games.

Sonic Rush

  • Inclusion of "new" character, Blaze the Cat.
  • Blaze calling Silver naive is similar to her initial opinion on Cream.
  • At the end of Blaze's story, she asks Cream, "We-We're friends, right?" Meanwhile in 06 Silver asks Blaze, "You're my friend, right?"
  • The background for Princess Elise may be a nod to Blaze's fire/princess backstory.
  • One gem includes the "boost," though it does not work the same way as in Rush.

Although there was not explanation for her presence, some unused voice clips suggest Blaze would have mentioned Sonic and talked to Amy.

Shadow the Hedgehog

  • While fighting Mephiles, Shadow says, "I know who I am," directly referring to his repeated line, "this is who I am."
    • He also repeats the phrase "Who are you?! And how do you know my name...?"
  • Shadow chases Eggman's train in Radical Train like with the Black Arms' tank in Lethal Highway's hero mission.
  • The Shadow/Sonic banter before Flame Core is not unlike the scene after Lethal Highway.
  • The punch/kick move preformed when without a gun is an early version of the move Shadow primarily uses in 06; he uses a version of Chaos Blast.
  • Shadow can/has to drive vehicles in some of the stages.
  • Shadow drives through/destroys falling walls in both the GUN Fortress and later in Aquatic Base.
  • Westopolis being a distressed city as the first level was echoed with Silver (Crisis City).
  • There is a fire tornado in Crisis City and a dusty one in Glyphic Canyon.
  • The tornado section of Crisis City for Sonic plays a lot like Cosmic Fall, including floating/moving/spinning platforms.
  • Shadow can get past a secret door after collecting 5 keys in each level. These keys resemble the ones Rouge has to find in Kingdom Valley.
  • Rouge comments on Death Ruins, expressing the desire to treasure hunt there some other time. In a similar way, she calls Tropical Jungle "Charming."
  • Shadow's theme is "All Hail Shadow." The original version was his hero-ending theme.

Expert Mode implies that the Commander wanted to make amends with Shadow; Shadow works for GUN in 06.

Sonic Riders

  • While boarding the player must hold X before lifting off. This is how the jumps were handled in Sonic Riders (though control over tricks are not possible in 06).

("Early") Sonic Cartoons/comics/etc

  •  Sonic would often carry his love interest in a similar way to Elise (also present in Sonic CD).
  • When Sara from the OVA wears her "wedding" dress, she and Elise visually look alike (pun intended).
  • Sally Acorn and Sonia the Hedgehog are both princesses, which may have inspired the title for Elise.
    • Despite the Mobian/tomboyish appearance, Sonic's (long-time) Western love interest, Sally, had reddish/brown hair and blue eyes, which may have influenced Elise to have those traits.
    • In the US, Amy was originally named Princess Sally, which again may have some influence on title.
  • Sonic introduces himself as "Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog." He often did the same in Sonic X
  • Shadow takes off his rings, something originating from Sonic X.
  • There is a girl in the hub world who wears a shirt similar to Chris.
  • The scene where Eggman sends Sonic & co to the future is similar to the 1st episode of Sonic X were he send them to another dimension (though it was not intentional in that case).

Similarities to Sonic and the Secret Rings

The game was originally going to be a Wii version of 06 and was made at the same time.

  • Sand Oasis is a level in Sonic and the Secret Rings. Two "secret" oasis-es can be found in Dusty Desert.
  • Sonic goes on an adventure with a human-like girl character, though just as a friend.
    • He tells both girls to smile.
  • Sonic is called a rat several times; Eggman calls him a rat in 06.
  • The Erazor mentions "Iblis."
  • A character is killed and brought back to life.
  • The events of 06 are un-done by time travel and are forgotten or only partially remembered--as if it never happened. Since only he journeyed to the world, the events of Secret Rings are only remembered by Sonic, almost as if they never happened.
  • Both have a generally "darker" tone.

Best Villain? Part 5: Relatable?

It's been said that a great villain needs a great motive. Two characters stand out, in the Sonic series...

Professor Gerald Robotnik used to be a kind man who wanted to perfect the world through "the power of science." He wanted to help and protect the people of Earth.

That all changed with the Ark shut down and the death of Maria Robotnik. Imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, Gerald went insane and became intent on destroying the planet he once strived to protect. He was later put to death, but not before setting his revenge plan into motion...

Despite his cruel actions his reputation was later respected once again after "Project Shadow" and his Eclipse Cannon proved vital in the Black Arms Invasion. Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Eggman) always looked up to his "brilliant" grandfather and called him "a great scientist."

Merlina was introduced as a sadder version of Sharah, but really she was behind the world's darkness. She used deceit to get her hands on the sacred scabbard of Excalibur, which would grant her the power to create an "Eternal Kingdom."

Merlina was saddened by death and endings. She knew how the Arthurian legend ended: with King Arthur killed. Life became futile to her. Even flowers were "destined to wither."

She grew to hate the idea and wanted to create a better story--one that never ended. She becomes a powerful entity that seems unstoppable. Her corruption was understandable--Sonic even admits it seems like he's the "bad guy," but he doesn't mind it.

Because Merlina was wrong. Everything has to end, and if it doesn't than it's not special. It loses what made it wonderful in the first place. After her defeat Sonic helped her understand this.

Merlina and Gerald both suffered from grief and wanted to fix the world in their corrupted eyes. For Merlina, it was making it everlasting, no matter the cost. For Gerald it was destroying it, no matter who would be destroyed with it.

Both came terrifyingly close to their goals.

Quote of the Month

"Please, Shadow, do it for me. For all the people on that planet. Give them a chance to be happy. Let them live for their dreams, Shadow...I know you can do it...

The Maria Mystery Conclusion

Based on my research, this is likely what happened:

Pre-invasion (50 years ago)

  1. The BioLizard, a large creature with chaos control (but a primitive live-support system) is created.
    1. BioLizard is considered a failure.
  2. A historical experiment when on a rampage and nearly destroyed the Ark (Emerl).
  3. Prof. Gerald worked with Black Doom to correct his errors.
    1. Shadow is created.
    2. Child Commander spies and is shocked to see Black Doom.
  4. Maria befriended Shadow the Hedgehog.
  5. An outbreak of Artificial Chaos...caused Chaos.
  6. Due to various pressures, the United Federation decided to shut down the Ark and imprison or eliminate anyone involved with "Project Shadow."
The Doom

  1. Maria ran with Shadow.
    1. (possibly helping fellow researchers or using heal units to gain GUN's trust).
    2. At some point the two are nearly caught in one of the halls.
  2. Maria prepares to launch Shadow in escape pod to earth.
  3. Maria is shot or injured. She says goodbye to Shadow.
    1. Shadow falls to earth in one of the pods.
    2. Maria dies.
  4. The Professor is taken to Prison Island.
    1. Shadow is found and taken to Prison Island.
    2. Shadow is eventually put in suspended animation.
    3. Prof. Gerald is eventually executed.

Present Time

  1. Shadow is released but eventually remembers his promise.
  2. After a brush with death Shadow remembers little.
    1. Black Doom gives Shadow false memories to gain the hedgehog's support.
  3. Shadow (re?)remembers his promise.
  4. Shadow makes peace with the past.

Shadow is one of the few characters to have a known background beyond the events of the games. It would be interesting to see this further expanded. On the other hand, Shadow letting go of the past was a wise move that prevented him from being used by others. Furthermore, Maria Robotnik hasn't appeared in the games since 2005. Ergo, seeing her again is unlikely.

Despite the different styles or stories, all end with Maria wishing the best for a world she never got to visit.

The Maria Mystery Q&A

Maria-related Questions and Answers

Why does Maria's appearance change?
  • Shadow's memories are inconstant do to interference from Black Doom, possibly Gerald, and possibly himself (blocking it out).
    • Also, in the real world, 4 years passed between SA2 and Shth, allowing new tech or designs.
      • Since Sonic X was an Anime and comics have different artists, she's had different styles.

How did Maria get Shadow in that tube thing?
  • It's never shown. In the games I'd assume she tricked him (like Eggman tricking Sonic but less menacing). Not sure how she did with the setting in Sonic X.
Why couldn't Maria go too?
  • From the way it looks, someone had to release the escape pod from the outside. Perhaps there was an auto mode but GUN shut it down.
    • Also, if Maria did have NIDS, she may have had trouble surviving on the planet.
When/how did Maria really die?
  • The hallway scene seems fishy. Maria's promise in SthH and Sonic X imply she was shot during/before that scene. SA2 might suggest after, though it's hard to tell.
  • The only real fact is that she died in the "accident," likely killed by a GUN soldier.
Why isn't Maria mentioned as much?
  • Shadow accepted his past and has decided to live in the present.
  • Also, in the real word, the games have generally taken a "less serious" turn.

In Sonic 06 why doesn't Shadow time travel back and save Maria?
  • As mentioned, Shadow accepted what happened and decided to lay the issue to rest.
  • He was also too busy tracking/dodging Mephiles to further explore this Time Travel version of Chaos Control.

Why does Amy/Chris/Molly/Hope remind Shadow of Maria?
  • All these characters display some innocence or youth.
    • Amy is the same age and wears a dress and headband. Her positive personality also seemed similar to Maria.
    • Molly and Chris are both humans (Chris being the same age as Maria, Molly the same gender). All have similar blue eyes.
    • Hope is related to Maria and looks almost identical, but is obviously not the same person.
Is Maria a playable character?
  • In the PS2 and Gamecube versions of Shadow the Hedgehog, the character can be controlled with a second controller, similar to Tails' role in Sonic 2.
    • Maria is the first playable human female character.
  • Otherwise, no.

Who voiced Maria?
  • Moriah Angeline voiced the character in Sonic Adventure 2
  • Rebecca Honig (known for voicing Cream the Rabbit) voiced the character in Sonic X and Shadow the Hedgehog.
    • Bella Hudson (known for voicing Blaze the Cat) is sometimes mistaken as her voice actor in Sonic X, but it was Rebecca Honig (she just did a slightly different take between the appearances).
      • Ironically, Hudson did voice Molly.
What's Maria the Hedgehog?
  • A fan creation where she came back as a hedgehog (not canon).
Is Maria Shadow's girlfriend?
  • That's up to interpretation, but the main opinion is that she was like a sister to him.
Is Maria in Sonic Boom?
  • Nope!

The Maria Mystery (Extra)

There is more to the flashbacks, as well what is said during Shadow the Hedgehog levels like "The Doom" and "Lost Impact."

Still, I think I've covered the biggest "mysteries," here (bigger project than I imagined). However if looking for answers solo, here's some videos displaying the matter and a list of her main appearances:

Videos

List Of Appearances

Sonic Adventure 2

There are three flashbacks in Sonic Adventure 2.

  • (Team Dark) Shadow and Maria run down one of the halls (Shadow's point of view). Then it skips to Maria's promise.
  • (Team Dark) In the second, there is a scene with the two staring out one of the Ark's windows, with Shadow debating his purpose.
  • (Last Story) Maria's real promise.

Later, the Professor's diary confirms Maria's death.

Sonic Battle

Mentioned in the Professor's Journals.

Shadow The Hedgehog

  • In the game's first cutscene, Shadow and Maria are chased but this time she's killed in the hall.
  • (Semi-Dark) Following the story to "The Doom" will reveal a flashback--when the Ark was taken over.
      • Black Doom shows Shadow the first cutscene but from space (although it's possible they get away).
      • In "The Doom," Shadow has the option to exact revenge on GUN (not likely in the actual event since they hadn't killed Maria yet) to save researchers (Can Shadow say no to Maria?) or to simply escape as soon as possible (most likely scenario).
    • The end reveals another flashback with a Gun robot implied to have killed Maria.
  • (Hero) If taking the story to "Lost Impact" Shadow will recall an event from before GUN invaded. The Artificial Chaos (from SA2) have gone rouge, and it's up to Shadow to either help stop them or get to the goal.
    • Another version of Maria's promise. This one is significantly shorter.
  • (Last Way) In the end of the game, Maria appears in a video with Gerald warning Shadow of things to come.

Dark Brotherhood

Mentioned in Codex

Sonic X

There are four major flashbacks in Sonic X.

  • (ep 36) Shadow remembers running from the military with Maria and Gerald. Then Maria--despite Shadow's protest--launches him to earth. Shadow also recalls looking out the window with Maria, both wishing to see the planet.
  • (ep 37) The next information comes from Mr. Schimtz, who was one of the soldiers on the Ark. He reveals that he fired at her.
  • (ep 38) Two final bits are seen in another episode. One is Maria's promise, and the other features Maria wearing a pink dress (the one might simply be a fantasy of them getting to see earth).
  • She makes a cameo appearance in flashbacks in season 3.

Archie Comics

  • (issue 98) Maria's first appearance.
  • (issue 141) A holographic version of her helps Shadow find his purpose.
  • She had a few flashbacks and cameos in other issues.

The Maria Mystery: Final Words

One of the most common elements since Maria's debut is her last words. Although they all seem to have the same message, their existence further adds to the mystery...

Quoted References

Sonic Adventure 2 (Released Jun 2001)

"Shadow I beg of you, please do it for me... for a better future! For all the people who live on that planet...give them a chance to be happy...

"Let them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason why you were brought into this world.

"Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog"

Archie Comics (Issue 98, Released Sep 2001)

"Keep going, Shadow! I'm right behind you! We're almost there! I'll jump in as soon as you clear the hatch! UNGH!"

In 2007 Maria was able to give her request as a hologram: "You have to go and protect everyone now. And you'll always have me...[if you hold me in you heart]."

Sonic X (Japanese) (Released Dec 2003)

First Memory:

"I beg you...Shadow...Please, do it for me...for all of the people who are living on that planet...[inaudible] Adios, Shadow the Hedgehog."

Second Memory:

"I beg you, Shadow...You'll have to take my place in the future. Everyone who lives on that planet...give them a chance, and they will live very blessed lives.

Then our wish will be realized. You were created just for that cause. The one who will watch over and protect us...just like a shadow."

Sonic Battle (Released Jan 2004)

"Bring hope to humanity."

The quote came from the Professor's Journal, "They tell me her parting words were 'Bring hope to Humanity.'" This suggests it was heard by a GUN soldier or someone else aboard the Ark.

Sonic X (English Dub) (Released Dec 2004)

First Memory:

"Listen Shadow, I want you to promise me...please...whatever happens remember I'll always be your friend, Shadow. We always talked about going to visit the planet one day...but it looks like you'll have to go there with out me. Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog."

Second Memory:

"Shadow, please promise me...That you'll help people...and be...friends with them...I'm sure you'll be very happy down there, Shadow. I only wish that I could go along with you.

"The world looks so beautiful from up here in space...but my Grandfather says the people who live there have to face many problems. That's why you were created. To help those people. And...to be their friend."

Shadow the Hedgehog (Released Nov 2005)

"Please, Shadow...I need your help! Everyone's fate depends on...YOU."

Maria also expressed that Shadow would protect the planet while appearing on an old video created before her death.

Conclusion

I always found "Maria's promise" as one of the deepest points of the Sonic series as a whole. Here is a young girl, close to death, asking for hope and happiness...not revenge.

Which Sonic X adaption is more accurate to SA2?

I think they're both fairly accurate. The original is worded closer to the games (as you can see), and adds a bit about Shadow's name. The dub adds more about wanting to visit the planet. The main message is the same, though.

So, what are her last words?

Her last wish is for Shadow to save/help the world. Her specific last words to him were "Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog." Her very last words were "Bring hope to humanity."

Yikes, how many times did she die?!

She only died once in the games; Shadow doesn't remember it correctly.

Anyways, from what I've found, Maria's wish was actually the same through out, just worded differently. Except for that awful inaccurate original Archie appearance.

The Maria Mystery: Death

One of the greatest mysteries regarding Maria is how she died.

Sonic Adventure 2
Maria's "death" is shown twice.

  • SA2 doesn't actually show Maria's death. While it would often be assumed that Maria was killed helping Shadow escape, it's not directly shown.
  • Do to both limited technology and the need to censor gore, it's hard to tell if Maria already had been shot, as future appearances suggest, or if she was simply killed after Shadow already escaped.
  • Her death is confirmed by Professor Gerald's diary: "I found Maria's name among those who died."

Sonic Battle
-Sonic Battle also confirms her death on the Ark. It mentions her last words, leading to wonder who heard them and told the Professor (likely GUN rather than Shadow because it mentions "they told me").

Sonic X
Maria's "death" is shown three times.

-A scene similar to SA2 is shown in Shadow's flashback, where Maria falls at the end (her "fall" is partially censored in the English version).

-A scene nearly identical yet different was shown as recalled by the man who shot her. This confirms her as being shot releasing Shadow (after being warned not to).

-Maria is shown in a separate flashback, in a setting more akin to SA2, on the floor (presumably already shot), where she asks Shadow her promise.

Sonic X English Censorship possibility

-the man who shot Maria Mr. Schimtz mentions that Maria was "taken away," opening the possibility that Maria was still alive. However, this was also after the man erupted in tears saying "she was so young." It's possible Maria was injured and died later, or perhaps he was referring to her dead body.
-Ultimately, the show often used phrases such as "take away" in place of "kill," so it's likely she died one way or another.

Shadow the Hedgehog
Maria's "death" is shown three times.

-The first cutscene shows Maria shot in one of the Ark's halls. While the scene of the two fleeing had previously been in both SA2 and SX, this was the first time Maria was shown to be killed in the hallway.

-After "The Doom," a level set during GUN's massacre, Maria and Shadow run into one of GUN's robots. Maria then disappears and and image of her falling is shown. Maria was implied to have been killed by the robot.

-Maria is shown falling to the floor like in Sonic X, where she begs Shadow to save the world. She was presumably shot/injured right before this.

Shadow the Hedgehog Censorship

-When the game was planned to be rated Teen, the hall scene where short-haired Maria was shot was longer (but how/where she was shot remained).
-The scene where Black Doom "reminds" Shadow of what happened originally has Maria's death reflected in the hedgehog's eyes. Since the scene shows the Shadow and Maria running down the hall, it may have been another indication that she was hurt in the hallway.

Archie Comics

-Maria is shot helping Shadow escape. Although the style changed, the scene was the same.
-During one of Shadow's flashbacks in the rebooted continuity, Maria is shown with an expression similar to the hall scene of Shadow the Hedgehog. However, her hair is it's normal length, meaning it may have simply been a similar--but not the same--scene.

Conclusion

While mild compared to other genres, it is rare for a character to die (without returning) in the Sonic series. With the different plots and episodes, what happened can get confusing, but it's clear she died helping Shadow escape.

Was Maria killed before Shadow was released or in the hallway?

Maria was shot before Shadow was released and likely died after. The hall way scene was most likely a creation by Black Doom to cloud Shadow's judgement or corrupt his memory. "The Doom," the stage featuring GUN's take over, may be a pun. It describes the tense situation as well as who was creating the memory--Black Doom.

Who killed Maria?

A Gun Solider. In Sonic X this character was shown to be Mr. Schmitz (Mr. Smith in the original).

Notably Mr. Smith knew about Professor Robotnik's experiments and thought Maria was releasing multiple creatures. Mr. Schmitz only heard rumors and did not "know what to expect," and he thought there was just one creature being released.

In the games the solider is hard to distinguish from other soldiers.

Why kill Maria?

As seen in Sonic X, Maria was sending a powerful, dangerous creature to Earth. Mr. Shmitz warned her to stop, stressing that he was serious, but Maria pulled the lever anyway. From his point of view, he had to fire (though he regrets it).

The games are a bit harsher, only saying that they "eliminated" everything related to the project. The professor mentions that they would all be imprisoned, but it's unknown if other survivors were incarcerated. "The Doom" level suggests that fellow researchers were harmed, if not killed.

Maria also may have been targeted because of her connection to Shadow.

Is this the darkest point in the Sonic series?

No. Ever hear of "Fun is Infinite?" Or Sonic 06: Last Story?

Maria's death would have a large impact on both Shadow and her grandfather Gerald Robonik. Robotnik went insane from the event, plotting to destroy the world he once tried to protect. Shadow began to set the mad man's plan in motion, but remembered Maria's true wish. He strives to keep her promise to this day.

The Maria Mystery: Appearance

When it comes to Maria Robotnik, questions have been left unanswered...

One of the mysteries if the most obvious, her visual look.

Appearances

Maria originated in Sonic Adventure 2, where she, a blond 12 year-old, looked similar Alice from Alice in Wonderland.

When the game was released as SA2 Battle, on Gamecube, there were some slight differences...

Maria's first look in the Archie comics was WAY off. Having brown hair and a white dress, she hardly looked like the same person.

Maria in Sonic X would be closer to the original, being nearly identical. The only main difference is the addition of shoes...SA2 Maria was barefoot.

In one of her last appearances on the show, she was also shown wearing a pink dress.

Shadow the Hedgehog's first cutscene showed some differences a returning fan might have noticed. Her dress was slightly different--no long sleeves--and her hair was shorter. She looked younger, blonder, (and thanks to more advanced technology) more realistic (not to the same point as humans in 06, though).

For a moment her hair looks longer for some reason...

Just thought that was weird.

However, in other parts of the game, her hair is it's SA2 length. Also (like in Sonic X) she now has shoes.

The Archie comics would later correct their mistake and retcon Maria's real look in. Although the style varied by artist, she looked much closer to the games.

"nearly identical to her game counterpart"

Conclusion

So what does this mean? That Maria doesn't look the same.

That's not saying much. This is a video game, and appearances change all the time (just look at Sonic). And appearing in "other media" will naturally lead to differences. I assume "brown haired" Maria was a coloring error.

But what of (at least some of this) is on purpose?

The main oddity is the Shadow the Hedgehog cutscene...Was it simply a background, in-the-real-world decision to update her look? Or was were the creators hinting that Shadow's memory was tampered with? Considering Black Doom's role and personality, the evil alien would have no trouble fooling Shadow into doing his work.

Whether a last minute change, or to cause more questions, the inconsistency remains strange.

WHAT IS THAT SHOE?!
