Soniccomics: "Sonic Generations"

"Did you know? This is the only Sonic game to feature both Classic and Modern designs--" Wrong. Now it is, at least. Sonic Forces now makes this "trivia" worthless.

First off, the art is colorful, expressive, and shaded well. There are a few changes like the addition of a lake that are kinda' nice. I like how the entire sky goes dark when the Time-Eater appears.

Likewise, there are some changes in words spoken, but like other adaptaions there are plently of word-for-word quotes. Unfortunatly, there's not much changed or added. It's more or less the same thing as the first cutscene but with classic Sonic standing around at the end. It's very short, too.

Ranking (S=good, F=bad): C-

Nothing important. If the art wasn't as clean and shiny as it is, I would have ranked this lower.

Sonicomics: "Sonic Colors"

"Did you know--" EW! Sonic Colors!

Right away I can see that this art is better. Both Yardley's pencils and the colors from Matt Herms. Away from the Wii's stunning graphics, the wisps actually look kind of cute.

Like in the game, Orbot and Cubot are annoying, but Sonic and Tails aren't nearly. The dialogue is better...or is it the lack of Roger Crap Smith? With the added expressions, the once lame translator joke seems...funny.

This is much easier to read as a comic than to hear as a video game.

Score (E is worst, S is best): B

The art is nice and so is the dialogue. It goes over the first few cutscenes without completely copying. I heard once that Flynn's favorite game is Colors (something that made me seriously doubt that guy's role as writer), but it shows, here. It feels a lot cleaner than the other adaptations.

Sonicomics: "Sonic Unleashed!"

"Did you--" Yes.

"In another time...In another place..." Oh No.

It starts in the middle of the first cutscene and doesn't go much further. The words are different, but it's mostly just a very lame, unexciting version of the first cutsecne.

I love Unleashed, and was hoping for something a bit better. Sonic travelling with Chip, explaining what happened to Tails if needed.

The first cutscene was exciting and this version is the complete opposite. Art is nothing special. It's short and doesn't make sense. "Why did I turn into this...Werehog?" Coin that name yourself, Sonic?

Final Score (S is good, E is bad): E

It's an insult to the game.

Thank goodness for the Shattered World Crisis. It wasn't as accurate to the beginning of the story, but I'm starting to think that's a good thing.

Sonicomics: "Sand, Spirits, and Sonic Speed" (Sonic and the Secret Rings)

"Did you know? Secret Rings was released exclusively for Nintendo Wii." You don't say!

When I first heard about the "exclusive" comic with certain SatSR copies, I knew I wanted it. I don't know if I knew much about the comics back then...I just thought it would be a continuation of the game (the ending mentions Sonic having "many adventures" before going home). Either that or Sally or someone scolding Sonic and telling him to stay home and read a book (because of his cold).

Since then I realized neither would be the case, and figured it would probably just be an adaptation of the first cutscene. Surprisingly, it's not.

We get a nice description instead of the abrupt "in another" greeting other adaptations have gotten. The art is disappointing. It's not too bad, but it doesn't blend well with the SatSR style and it's nothing to write home about. The backgrounds seen pretty dark, too. The Storybook Series was done very well visually and the comics can't seem to replicate that. Sharah looks off sometimes, and the Erazor looks hilarious.

Sonic and Sharah bond a little while explaining things a bit. The fact that Sonic mentions Fang tells me the whole "in another" dimension plan wasn't a thing yet. Still, he doesn't mention the Freedom Fighters, so maybe not...

It's nice to have Sonic and Sharah just talk. It's similar to a cutscene, and it fits in before Pirate Storm (as made clear by the end).

Score (S is good, E is bad): B-

It's nice but I find all the re-caping unnecessary. It originally only came with the game, so whoever got it either knew that all already or would very soon.

Sonicomics: "Knight Time" (Sonic and the Black Knight)

"Did you know? Each rival is based on Arthurian legend and resemble Sonic's Rivals." Yes. DID YOU know the Jet and Silver were supposed to have roles in the story but got cut due to time?

"Another Time, Another Place."

WTF?

I like Sonic and the Black Knight. The story was so good!

Yet all this adaptation is only the 1st cutscene. Literally. Word-for-word. How is Ian Flynn even considered a "writer" for this?

If the art was top notch, I'd be okay with this. But it's average at best. Yardley's pencils are bland and fail to convey the action and movement of the opening. It doesn't try to mimic the story book style at all, opting for shades akin to the main comic. The colors are stale and inaccurate. Only positive portions are the amour--it looks a lot better than Merlina.

This comic is pointless. It changes nothing and makes the cutscene look ten times lamer than it is.

Score (S=the best, E=the worst): E

Disappointing. I hate to have that score since I enjoyed the game so much, but it's nothing but untapped potential.

Sonicomics: "Invaders From Beyond" (Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood)

"Did you know? Sonic Chronicles is the first official turn-based RPG video game in the Sonic franchise." Yes. Also: cross out "first," and write "only."

"In another time...in another place..." OH NO?!

Surprisingly, this starts off interesting. It actually "fills in the blank" like I hoped the comics would. In this case, it follows Tails and Knuckles as they try to find whose been stealing the Chaos Emeralds.

It's written fairly well and it stays faithful to what was mentioned in the game. Art's at the same level as the main comics. Main con? It ends! It was nice to see Shade (and we'll likely never see her again, so...).

Score (S is best, E is worst): A

I feel weird giving a comic this high of a score, but's not bad.

Sonicomics: "High Stakes on the High Sea" (Sonic Rush Adventure)

"Did you know? Marine the Raccoon makes her debut in Sonic Rush Adventure." YES I KNOW THAT. WHO DOESN'T?!

This time instead of another time/place, we get "another day...another adventure." I guess because these events actually happen?

We immediately run into Marine...dialogue slightly different. I can appreciate the mushrooms in the background--signs of Plant Kingdom...except that's on a different island! It's not seagul island, it's windmill Island! Add in Marine's pirate-ish (instead of Australian) accent, and it's clear they didn't have much to go on when writing this one.

Dialogue is (as I said), different, but not bad. The art isn't bad, either. It fits with the rest of the comic series.

The whole issue's like that, really. Different, but not in a bad way. I do wish Johnny was on his boat--it made him clear he was a different kind of rival (because running is WAY overdone).

We also have an ending (provided by Sonic Universe # 1). Like before, it's similar to the game but different overall. The last bit is added by Marine and it's a cute/funny way of ending it.

Final Score (S is best, E worst): C

There's not much to it, but it's cute.
