Sonic Runners App OST Review

Summary

The first Runners game was surprising. It captures a lot of the same type of sound from modern-current games like Unleashed, Lost World, Colors, and others. It has nice piano, guitar, even violins and in total: it was very complex for music from an app. Also, "Theory of Attack" seemed to be some inspiration for TSR...

The sequel I'm not really gonna' count because apparently it mostly just reuses music.

Best Song: Fly Away

Runner-Up (s): Theory of Attack, End of Summer, Power Ride, Fly Away, Where To Day?, Fiery Passion, Ambition,

This is quite beautiful, and the Unleashed vibes are welcome. A nice combo of piano and guitar that would easy fit into a more known game.

I actually prefer Theory of Attack, but that's probably because of TSR.

Worst Song: Strange Parade

Runner Up (s): Go Quickly!

Only one song sounds like it doesn't belong. This high, vibrant, Color's Starlight Carnival-like song was easily the least engaging.

Final Ranking: B

Admittedly I never expected an App's OST to score so high, but Runner's OST doesn't sound like an App; they did not take any short cuts and it deserves more recognition.

Sonic Dash Series OST Review

Summary

The music of the first Dash game mostly reuses music from Sonic Generations and other games. The main menu while given new life is really Blue Sky Zone from Sonic Jump. There is another remix, but overall much of the music is old.

Surprising Dash 2, based on Sonic Boom, seems more original. Unless it reuses from Fire/Ice, which I have not listened to yet, it seems pretty different than the other Boom Titles. More refreshing.

There were a few other versions, but I believe they reuse the same levels/music.

Best Song: Jungle Level Music (D2)

Runner-Up (s): Main Menu (D2)

From what I can tell this is the main music for all the levels? It is a great example of sounding more on the modern side but still having those edgy Sonic-y elements.

Worst Song: Seaside Hill Remix (D1)

Runner Up (s): Main Menu (D1)

I'm really sick of Seaside Hill. It's one of those levels that are completely exhaustible. Unlike the above example, this song is overly 2010s and strips away what made the original song tolerable.

Final Ranking Sonic Dash: E

There are only a few new songs and they kind of suck.

Final Ranking Sonic Dash 2: D

I like the few songs in this a lot better than the first game, which was a surprise with it being Boom. Still, there's only a few songs and not much to it.

Classic Era Wrap-Up

Sonic Music from 91-94

Sonic would set himself apart from other games in many ways. One way was through memorable and enjoyable music.

Trivia

  • The composer of Sonic 1 and 2 was in a Japanese pop band, Dreams Come True
    • The theme of Sonic 2 was actually one of their songs, "Sweet Sweet Sweet" ("Sweet Dreams"), which was later remixed and put in Sonic 06 as a reference.
  • The music of Sega CD games were part of the selling point. The system was capable of much higher quality, which is why when it comes to clarity and standards, Sonic CD's soundtracks sound like they could have been made today.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Boom, an album featuring extended and remade music from Sonic CD (US) and Sonic Spinball, was the first time a Sonic OST was actually released (Feb 94).
    • The Japanese music would be remixed a bit later and be released as Sonic the Hedgehog Remix album in Japan (Dec 94).
      • There was also an album featuring the music of Sonic and Knuckles around the time (Oct 94).
  • Apparently the main theme for Spinball was made within 2 hours after Sega realized they did not have the rights to Sonic 1's theme.
    • The composer for spinball would also work on &Knuckles and later the Black Knight. He also composed the Virtual Sonic album.
  • And yes. Michael Jackson DID work on Sonic 3.
    • Several songs have hints. Carnival Night, for example, has a part very similar to "Jam."

E: 9

Best Soundtrack of the Era:

For whatever the reason, Sonic CD got 2 soundtracks, and they're both awesome. I favor the NA version for several reasons, but to make things simple:
Sonic Boom & Stardust Speedway Bad Future > Toot Toot & HueHuehuehue

Best Handheld Music of the Era:

This was tough because by todays standards, they all suck. However, despite it's challenges, the Game Gear version of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was not too bad. Spinball's was not too bad either. Though I'd recommend the console version before either.

Most Underrated Console Music:

Three way tie! First, Wacky Worlds is by far the most underrated, even if it is not much of "Sonic" game. Next, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine may borrow a lot, but it's fun music makes the game worth playing! Finally, Sonic Spinball is easily on par with Sonic 1-3, and deserves way more credit.

Of the main 4 titles, Sonic 2 would defiantly be my first choice.

Most Overrated Console Music:

Double tie?!

Yes, the music of Sonic 3 is good. MJ did work on it, but no one is really sure how much of his work remained in the game. The OST seems to get a lot more attention simply because of MJ's involvement, but that seems like a stupid reason to hype it up, especially when he's not even credited. And those "woos" were just random 90s samples from my understanding, lol.

Also, the JP OST for Sonic CD is also very good. However, it gets so much attention! From Sega and the fans! And people talk about it like it's some music that fell from heaven while the US version is just some piece of trash. I think the US version is better and I'll stand by that, but I wouldn't diss the JP OST like that. They may not sound alike, but the truth is they are on the same level and both fit fine.

Worst Music of the Era:

looks can be deceiving

There were so many choices. The classic era was not without its faults, and the arcade and 8-bit side to it was often painful to listen to.

The worst, though, was PICO game, Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld. Horrible quality, nothing redeemable, annoying and hard find acceptable.

Sonic Triple Trouble OST Review

Summary

After the successful introduction of Knuckles, they had to try and replicate their success on the Game Gear. The game would become known for another factor: Nack the Weasel, or Fang the Sniper. The obscure character first debuted in this game, becoming a side villain of the classic era. Sort of.

Best Song:  Fang the Sniper

Runner-Up (s): Boss, 2D Special Stage, Final Boss, Meta Junglira Zone

Surprisingly this little bit is intense and I guess it makes a pretty 2-dimensional character (lol) a bit more interesting.

Worst Song: Sunset Park Zone

Runner Up (s): 3D Special Stage, Great Turquoise Zone, Tidal plant Zone, Robotnik Winter Zone, Ending, Metal Sonic

So, um, is this out of tune or just bad?

Final Ranking: E

Compared with the Genesis alternatives, this is pretty disappointing. Overall it's like going to a carnival where they play odd music through old, broken speakers. Static-y trash, save one or two parts.

Sonic and Knuckles OST Review

Summary

I remembered the music of Sonic and Knuckles fondly. Lava Reef! Sandopolis! Death Egg! Even Mushroom Hill! Flying Battery and Sky Sanctuary were overrated, but good. Well Flying Battery, anyway.

I've realized, though, that these songs just weren't made for headphones. Ones that I usually enjoyed in game like Sandopolis were annoying. And the main theme, ouch. No wonder people are praising Mania's garbage music, they crave the classics but use head phones!

As a side note, with the exception of Lava Reef the acts don't seem very different from one another (unlike Sonic 3?).

Best Song:  Lava Reef Act 1

Runner-Up (s): Lava Reef 2, Sandopolis 1, Flying Battery 1, Death Egg 1, Mushroom Hill 1/2, Credits, theme of Knux

Was there even any other choice? I don't care if it steals from an 80s song, it's a Sonic classic!

While 3 had Ice Cap, &K had this memorable, addictive synth-friendly song that made a difficult level as fun as possible.

Worst Song: Sky Sanctuary

Runner Up (s): Title, Invincible, Ending

MAKE IT STOP. It's loud, high, annoying, harsh. Best thing is the dramatic drums. I hate to say it, but the crappy Generations version was somehow better. With this music and the fairly boring level design, I have no idea why it's a fan-favorite.

Final Ranking: C

What can I say? It was not nearly as good as I remembered. Previously I didn't really think Sonic 3 was that much better, but I was wrong. Take out Lava Reef and it is pretty average.

It has it's moments, but I'd rank it below Sonic 1, 2, and 3.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric OST Review

Summary

After Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, I went into this next one with an open mind. Boom has a bad name, but I still found a few tracks to be fond of.

Unfortunately, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric should be renamed Sonic Bedtime: Rise in the Morning. I usually like atmospheric, dramatic tracks. But this time around, ugh. Not that it is bad, but it can be boring.

A lot of the music sounds very similar to itself. To be honest, it's not really atmospheric like "painting a picture" of the location. It's more like the tone of what's going on, mostly being about being careful, exploration, or tension.

Some have compared it to a movie soundtrack, but it seems more generic. There does not seem to be a main goal. Indiana Jones, for example, has a really fun and memorable adventure theme. Star Trek: Voyager has a dramatic opening that is more depressed but does not stray from exploration. Many recall the ominous mystery of Lost's brief opening. Horror movies are more menacing, romance movies swell-up...So if Rise of Lyric was a movie or a show, what would its theme be? What would it be about? Sadly it's hard to say. That lack of personality/purpose is what makes it generic, not the quality.

If this were cutscene music I'd excuse it, but it's pretty hard to imagine boss battles with these tracks. It would make the "slow" game even slower.

It's still more mature/professional than what I expect from the Boom side of the franchise I guess.

Best Song:  Lyric's Weapon Facility

Runner-Up (s): Abandoned Research Facility (Generator), Lyric's Weapon Facility (Save Tails), Lyric's Weapon Facility (Elevator), Pit (boss), Pit (inside 2), Slow Poke Isle (chase), Slowpoke Isle Cave (battle), Creeper Gorge, Sky Citadel (chase), Lyric's Lair (Speed)

Out of this entire OST, this is the only one I'll probably still remember or want to listen to again. Yeah, it's on the slow side, but I think it is quite sad and beautiful. I could almost see this as some kind of lonely Ice Cap bad future, and the instrumentation is more interesting.

Worst Song: Clift's Excavation Site (battle)

Runner Up (s): Main Theme, Forest Battle, Lyric's Tomb (forest, tomb), Lyric's Weapon Facility (Sentinel), Pit (Inside 2/Speed), Slowpoke Isle, Slowpoke Isle Cave, Ocean Purification Plant (entrance), Ocean Purification Plant (outside/battle), Final Boss, Bygone Island, Bygone Island (battle), Clift's Excavation Site, Clift's Excavation Site (Speed)

A lot of this OST is simply easy to forget. A lot are similar, just adding a few instruments here and there for the different versions (battle, chase, speed, etc). This one is a good example. It's not just dull or "boring," but I don't have any idea what this evacuation site looks like or who is fighting. Bland, undefined, and not worth listening to.

Final Ranking: E

If you're looking for tracks that are dramatic and "movie like"...I'd recommend the cutscene music of 06. Of Secret Rings. Of Zero Gravity. There have been great, epic Sonic tracks that are "slower" yet stunning. With that ONE exception, Lyric just isn't really worth a listen.

It's not that the music is terrible, it doesn't make you hate it. But even the "good" tracks did not really leave any kind of impression. For the first time I have to agree with the "generic" consensus.

Also, Shattered Crystal beats this one by a long shot.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal OST Review

Summary

Sonic Boom has been called the worst game since 06, or worse than 06. Since I'm in the rare club that doesn't think 06 is that bad, I try not to judge Boom since I've never played it. However based on the redesigns, plot, voice acting, and, I'll admit it, reception, I've generally tried to stay away.

Shattered Crystal was the handled alternate to "Rise of Lyric." This is another Richard Jacques composed game, and as such there are some similarities to previous. The early, "Sea" locations and Worm Tunnel defiantly have that up-beat All-Stars Transformed vibe. A lot actually seem like the Saturn version of Volcano Valley--dramatic, heroic, explorer-ish, etc.

Generally I found this OST to be a surprise because most of the tracks actually seem rather dark/ominous. After seeing the TV show I was expecting something more childish and whimsical, but generally it was a lot more serious than expected.

However, the tracks seem really short/repetitive. I can understand why fans might get bored with the slower tracks. Aside from Air Fortress 2, Robot Facility, and some of those Sea ones, I wouldn't care to listen to extended versions.

Best Song: Robot Facility

Runner-Up (s): Air Fortress 2, Seaside Coast Map, Seaside Beach 1/2, VS Sticks, Worm Tunnel, Scrapyard 1, Volcanic Caverns 2

Blown away. Easily my favorite out of all of this for it's dark, industrial sound. It really reminds me of The Terminator, which is not what I was expecting from this game at all. Amazed.

Worst Song: Main Menu

Runner Up (s): Seaside Jungle 2, Shadow Canyons 1/2, Ancient City 1/2 Air Fortress 1, Lyric's Air Ship

Apparently this is the theme in Rise of Lyric, too. If this were cutscene music or something, it would be okay. But as a main theme it...it's not Sonic. I try not to say that with things, because Sonic music goes through all kinds of genres and sounds! But this is...Pirate Batman.

Final Ranking: D

It's a shame this OST has a bad name because of the Boom legacy, but it's not too shabby. Robot Facility 1 and Air Fortress 2!!!

Again, though, there's not much to the tracks. Also it's pretty slow-paced for a Sonic game, which would probably throw people off.

Sonic Jump App Series OST Review

Summary

Some Japan-exclusive Sonic apps were created in the 2000s, and some made it to the states. Most recognized Sonic apps, though, were from the 2010s. The "Sonic Jump" series started with a 2005 java version, then there was a sequel, "Sonic Jump 2." In 2012 "Sonic Jump" was later remade and released to a wider audience. Finally, the last version, "Sonic Jump Fever" was made 2 years later.

I decided to review these all at once. "Sonic Jump 2" seems to reuse music from the first title. The 2012 title faithfully remixes them but with better instruments and a clearer sound. While Fever remixes the zones yet again, they are now more energetic/electronic/2010s-ish.

Blue Sky Zone would later be remixed for Sonic Dash

Best Song: Mechanical Zone (2012)

Runner-Up (s): Main Menu (2005), Green Hill (2005), Mechanical Zone (2005), Title (2012), Cosmic Zone (2012), Boss (2012), Fever Mode (2014), Jungle Zone (2014)

This has fast, fun energy alongside a guitar that gives it some tension. Could easily be in Riders or something, but it is a pretty short.

Worst Song: Cosmic/Bonus Zone (2005)

Runner Up (s): Green Hill (2014), Mountain Zone (2014)

Sadly the more primitive side to the 2005 one shows pretty easily with this one.

Final Ranking 2005/2008 Version: E

It's kind of like a combo of the Advance series and a less harsh Sonic 4. Pretty nice but simple and held back by the quality.

Final Ranking 2012 Version: C

A wondrous (musical) remake of the first game.

Final Ranking 2014 Version: D

Colors' Syndrome Strikes Again! I don't really like their over-zealous, "modernized" versions. They aren't terrible, but don't have the same charm as the 2012 ones.

Sonic Unleashed OST Review

Summary

Sonic Unleashed was panned in its time for having "horrendous Werehog stages" but now it's a beloved fan favorite and called one of the best.

Along with praise for the story, balanced script, world-travel, and even the change in gameplay, the music has gotten a lot of attention and is often called the best in the series. With good reason.

The inspiration of different settings have contributed toward the atmospheric and steady hub world day/night music. The cultural influences also affect the stages which are a bit more peppy. In addition to Sonic-typical rock and guitar, this OST also uses a lot of jazz themes and horn. There is a clear separation between day and night.

As with most games of the era, it has a main vocal and vocal-closing theme. Like with the preceding game, Sonic Colors, it also has a common instrumental theme which is considered the Main Title or World Map.

Like with Colors and Lost World, the Main theme seems a bit overused. Although it seemed pretty climatic in the game, but the cutscene music in general was a bit disappointing.

Eggman's theme from 06 is used often. Several samples/melodies/etc seem to be in reference to past games. I believe the Tornado music is remade from the past as well.

Best Song: Eggmanland Day

Runner-Up (s): Jungle Joyride Day/Night, Rooftop Run Day/Night, Windmill Isle Day/Night, Aird Sands Day/Night, Cool Edge Day/Night, Dragon Road Day/Night, Skyscraper Scamper Day/Night, Savannah Citadel Day, Eggmanland Night, Adabat Day/Night, Atopos Day/Night, Shamar Day/Night, Hoolska Day/Night, Tornado Defense 2, Egg Dragoon, Vs Titan, Vs Perfect Dark Gaia, Always

I'm not entirely sure what makes this one stand out so much. Could be due to Eggmanland being Eggmanland. There were so many good choices, and a great deal of competition (especially from Adabat--and including Eggmanland Night).

First, I like the pace. There is a sense of urgency but not with out a dramatic, dangerous undertone. The piano makes it kind of creepy and there is a part that sounds out of Zero Gravity. I really like the effects they used to make it seem like the sounds drift left and right, kind of disorienting. It raises the stakes and even just musically lets the player know this level is going to be different.

Worst Song: Empire City Night

Runner Up (s): Empire City Day, Boss Battle

It sounds very nice at first, but that...what is that, a harmonica? It's so loud and kind of ruins it. In the Day version it's at least a bit catchy, but this is slower. Then there's that out-of-now-where horn.

I like the bongos or whatever the percussion is near the second half, but overall I'm not a huge fan.

Best Vocal Song: Endless Possibilities

Runner-Up (s): N/a

Pure Sonic 2000s energy, this song has attitude but also confidence and a love of life. It's positive and happy but not over-the-top. The style is not trying to update Sonic into something more modern or something he's not. At a quick pace, it has a free spirit and feels genuine.

Usually it's very hard to have any song rival the legacy of Crush 40, but this one delivers. There's even a brief guitar solo.

Worst Vocal Song: My Dear Friend

Runner Up (s):N/a

"My Dear Friend" was sad but not too memorable to me. However, listening, paying more attention to the lyrics...ow, it's not just sad, it's...it's...I don't know, emotional. A sweet ode to a friendship that can't last and yet in a way always will.

It's not bad, but it's not "Endless Possibilities."

Final Ranking: S

I knew this was going to be a high-ranking OST, and it soon became clear the S would be a given. All of the songs are not only good, but better. I can easily agree to it being one of the best. They just went the extra mile with this one, and it shows.

Transitional Era Wrap-Up

Sonic Music from 98/9-2005

The music of the  Adventure series would help redefine what to expect in the world of Sonic music.

Trivia

Jun Senoue reused/remixed several tracks from his work on Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis) in Sonic Adventure. This was partially to introduce the music to Japanese audiences because 3D Blast was not released in Japan (or at the time, I think?). Senoue is the main composer for this era, composing (or mostly composing) Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog

The "Sonic" band, Crush 40 (mainly featuring Jun Senoue on guitar and vocals by Johnny Gioeli), was formed shortly after Sonic Adventure (officially "Open Your Heart" was before they were a band). They would go on to create and/or cover almost 20 songs for the series.

Total Scoring

S: 2
A: 0
B: 1
C: 5
D: 5
E: 1

Best Soundtrack of the Era:

Sonic Adventure 2 deserves the respect it gets.

Best Handheld Music of the Era:

Funky, Sonic Advance 3 is like taking the best from the Gameboy games prior and turning it into something all its own.

Most Underrated Console Music:

I'm calling this one a tie between Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog. Even though Heroes' main theme, final boss theme, Seaside Hill and maybe Bingo Highway are pretty well known, the rest of it seems underappreciated.
Shadow the Hedgehog is even worse. Most fans don't realize this is where Shadow's theme ("All Hail Shadow") came from--or that the game has 6 vocal songs just for Shadow! Or that it has a few remixes from SA2. It's not forgettable, it's not generic, it doesn't get old. The music is excellent but has a bad name all because "Shadow has a gun!"

Most Overrated Console Music:

The music of Sonic Adventure has been called the best or one of the best plenty of times. Compared to the other "best" music in the series--90s or 2000s--it's bland. In general it's still good, and it did help push the series in a new direction (just like everything Sonic Adventure). But it's not as great as its reputation; it's just average.
Adventure's Music < Heroes' Music < Shadow's Music

Worst Music of the Era:

The one E rank belongs to Pinball Party. It was not so bad. Sonic Battle seemed harsher, but it at least tried to be more than it was. The only real memorable thing about this dull OST is that it had remixes, and even Pocket Adventure beats it out in that area.

Shadow the Hedgehog OST Review

Summary

The music of Shadow the Hedgehog has pretty much been forgotten by fans simply because they were upset they did not get Sonic Heroes 2. When I judged Shadow the Hedgehog as better than the Sonic-classic, I sighted the music as a reason. Does that decision remain?

Defiantly. As I acknowledged then, the OST doesn't have the same variety in genres as other games, mostly relying on a heavier rock vibe. But this is a spin-off...

Sonic Riders' OST is awesome, but it did not diverge into many other genres either (in that case being mostly electronic/techno/future ish). Knuckles Choatix was a funky creation, but most of its songs used the same type of instruments and themes as well. Spin-offs adopt their own style, but for some reason that seems forgotten when it comes to this OST.

It does have variety while keeping in with its own themes. "The Ark," for example, has its guitar/percussion, but it has its higher pitched artificial qualities. With those "back to the mic" samples, the song could have easily been in Sonic Rush. That song is actually a remix of Final Rush from SA2, and there are quite a bit of remixes and hints of SA2. The calm piano-led "Lost Impact" is also a remix of Sonic 3D Blast's Panic Puppet (Saturn), and some music like the "I Refuse" cutscene seems to reference "This Machine"/Heroes.

Listening to this music alone, even levels I thought of as boring like Sky Troops seemed far more interesting (the level's brown/rocky design may have been to blame).

Best Song: Central City

Runner-Up (s): Westopolis, Lethal Highway, The Ark, Lava Shelter, GUN Fortress, Lost Impact, The Doom, Digital Circuit, Mad Matrix, Death Ruins, Final Haunt, Space Gadget, Cosmic Fall, The Last Way, Blue Falcon, Heavy Dog, Egg Beater, Egg Dealer, Black Doom (boss), Black Bull, Battle Mode, Menu, Title Screen, Awake Hero/Dark, Chaos Control, 90% of the Cutscene music

This was a tough choice--Leathal Highway, The Ark, Lava Shelter, GUN Fotress, Lost Impact--there were a lot of good options. Central City seems to be the best summary of the game's tension. It's speedy, guitar heavy, has synthetic parts that keep it a bit wacky. Rough, distressed, panicked...perfect for the city that's about to be blown up one way or another.

Worst Song: Iron Jungle

Runner Up (s): Flying with Tornado

This is perhaps the only song that seems to live up to its "boring" reputation. I don't know if I'd call it generic, but it's short and quickly becomes repetitive (this level could be pretty long I think). It sounds a bit familiar but that doesn't save it.

Best Vocal Song: I Am...All of Me

Runner-Up (s): Never Turn Back, Chosen One, Waking Up, Almost Dead, E.G.G.M.A.N. (Dr. Robeatnik Mix)

"Never Turn Back" and "Chosen One" could have easily taken this spot, but "I Am...All of Me" is phenomenal. The lyrics perfectly switch from one contrast to another--"Brave hearted hero, black hearted evil"--and the vocals perfectly capture anger and confusion. It the ultimate theme for the game (and for Shadow's journey).

It's a real shame that it's just been dubbed the "edgy" theme ("Almost Dead"? Way edgier).

WHY, GENERATIONS? WHY UNLOCK SPLASH HILL LIKE 2ND AND I AM ALL OF ME 2ND TO LAST?! YOU SUCK!

Worst Vocal Song: All Hail Shadow

Runner Up (s): -____-

Uh...what is this doing in the worst section? This song is awesome. NOTHING EVER FILLS THE HOLE INSIDE YOUR HEART!

I really like the whisper-y "bow your heads now all hail Shadow," and while the chorus might have been a fairly stupid concept, the rest of the lyrics are so fitting.

However (surprisingly) I think this is the weaker of the vocal songs. I guess the fact that Crush 40 covered it (better) kinda' takes away from it.

I felt like listing the Eggman remix would be a cheat, besides...

E.G.G.M.A.N. (Dr. Robeatnik Mix) > E.G.G.M.A.N.

Final Ranking: S

I was pretty indecisive about this one, A rank or S rank? There's nothing really wrong with it. Epic stage music, vocal themes, cutscene music, menus music...Underrated and mislabeled, that's for sure.

I don't think it's better than the S-Ranks I've given so far, yet it seems just as good or better than the previous A-ranks...

I guess this will be the cut-off point for S ranks.

Transitional-Classic Era Wrap-up

Sonic Music from 95-97

The Classic version of the Transitional Era experimented with "3D" and giving starring roles to characters like Tails and Knuckles. Naturally there was experimentation with the music, too.

Trivia

Jun Senoue, who would become known for his Sonic compositions in later years, composed about half of the Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast. Richard Jacques, who would also work on future Sonic titles, composed the Saturn version as well as Sonic R (which featured vocals by T.J. Davis).

Total Scoring

S: 0
A: 1
B: 3
C: 0
D: 4
E: 4

Best Soundtrack of the Era:

Even though the Genesis version is more popular with the fans, the Saturn version is better focused. A spectacular mix of atmosphere and techno-fun energy.

Best Handheld or Arcade Music of the Era:

Sonic the Fighters remains full of fun.

Most Underrated Music:

Sonic Labyrinth had the wrong idea and was not the best game to play. The music, though, is (surprising) not nearly as bad.

Most Overrated Music:

Knuckles Chaotix actually turned out to be pretty good, and it was unique and cool. Still, they stuck a couple bits in Mania, which would have been fine if there was stronger ties to the "main" games (aside from the levels that actually appear, the only games it seems to remember is Sonic CD-JP and oddly SegaSonic the Hedgehog). The music was also famous enough to be in Generations twice, or "Door into Summer" at least.
Sonic R was pretty good, and the music's reception has seemed mixed, honestly. Still, I've seen some call it the "best" which is kind of outrageous. If it's a favorite, I can understand. But the best of the Sonic series? Of all videogame music?!  Not quite...

Worst Music of the Era:

The music in Tails Sky Patrol is horrible. It's not Sonic, it's not Tails, it's just annoying. Luckily Tails Adventure was a bit better.

Sonic Jam OST Review

Summary

Almost forgot the music of this Sega Saturn complication game!

The Gallery song is a remix of the select screen from Sonic 3.

Best Song: Sonic World

Runner-Up (s): Time Attack

Finally, the origins! This is just beautiful. This cheery tune uses the themes of sea/tropical/nature to create a memorable and peaceful song.

Worst Song: Game Select

Runner Up (s): Manual

It's okay, but short and the sound effects are strange.

Final Ranking: E

Not bad but not special. "Sonic World" is for sure a jam to remember. The rest, not so much.

Sonic R OST Review

Summary

The music of Sonic R is infamous among fans. Either due to the Sonic-nostalgia of "Super Sonic Racing" or the use of "Can You Feel the Sunshine" in Creepypastas. Like with Sonic and the Secret Rings, it may also be due to the amount of vocals/lyrics.

With a very 90s sound to them, the music features female singing and positive lyrics.

Best Song: Back in Time

Runner-Up (s): Super Sonic Racing, Work It Out, Options

JUNGLE JOYRIDE?!!! It's not as infamous as the others, but it sounds really nice. First, I like that it was sung in a sort of a retro way. The lyrics don't seem as cheesy, and the upbeat instrumentation also gives it a bit of a wilder sound, like going back to some past.

Worst Song: Diamond in the Sky

Runner Up (s): You're My Number One, Living in the City

It's not too bad. I actually think this might be a good theme for Rouge or something, pretty classy. But it sounds kinda' too romantic or something for a racing game. And..."feel so HIGH!"

Final Ranking: D

The songs are pretty likeable. Sung beautifully, but could be pretty 90s or cheesy. Neat instrumentation. A lot of the lyrics just seems out of place I guess, yet its hard for Sonic R to be Sonic R with out them.

Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld OST Review

Summary

This Pico game is more of what I was expecting. 8-bit type of sound.

Best Song: Sonic-Ball

Runner-Up (s): Tree-climb, Egg-switch

It has it's speed.

Worst Song: Title

Runner Up (s): Toy Drop, Flag, Options, Floors 1-3, Floor 4

Annoying, like most of the music. Lacking Redeeming qualities.

Final Ranking: E

They try with a lot of these. And they also fail.

Tails and the Music Maker OST Review

Summary

This Pico game was not so bad. It also seems to put a "game" twist on some classical/known music.

Best Song: Credits

Runner-Up (s): Page 1

Gentle and nice.

Worst Song: Title

Runner Up (s): Page 3

The mix of higher and lower sounds do not work well.

Final Ranking: E

This is actually really cute, but it's nothing compared to the usual music of this series. Not especially original.

Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games OST Review

Summary

The music of Mario and Sonic @ the 2014 Winter Olympics had some interesting points. This title embraces more classical music and generally keeps a romanticized vibe, though it has its cool additions to keep it modern and fresh.

This time around I found the main theme fairly boring, as with many of the others. The events were really built up and could be fun. Still, it feels so focused on being an Olympic title it seems to forget its a Mario vs Sonic title.

The rival themes appear to be reused from previous Olympic games.

The Sonic music choices are odd. Diamond Dust, Blizzard Peaks, and Cool Edge make sense, but why beach themes like Windy and Ripply and Seaside Hill?

About half or less are remixed, and the other half is reused either from its original game, Sonic Generations, or Smash.

The ones remixed are: Sweet Mountain, Splash Hill, Blizzard Peaks, Route 99, Leaf Forest, Neo Green Hill, Speed Highway, Diamond Dust (Genesis), and Flying Battery.

As much as I hate Splash Hill Zone's music, the version 2 remix is admittedly awesome.

Best Song: Neo Green Hill

Runner-Up (s): Downhill Skiing, All Finger Skating, All Finger Skating Double, Blizzard Peaks, Flying Battery, Diamond Dust, Route 99

WOW. I knew Sonic Advance music could sound great. This version is a slower, more relaxed, Sonic Unleashed-ish version of the beach level. And it may be a beach one, but it was most impressive.

Worst Song: Delfino Plaza (Main Street)

Runner Up (s): Melody & Answer (all), Legends Showdown (all), Winter Sports Championship Race (all), Delfino Plaza (Market Street), Splash Hill Ver 1 & 3, Sweet Mountain

Annoying, overly horny, and whimsical in a bad way.

Final Ranking: D

Overall this OST meets expectations. Aside from those few remixes, though, it doesn't stand out from any of the other Olympic titles or from Sonic games in general.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood OST Review

Summary

When I played Sonic Chronicles, the music did not bother me too bad. I did not think it was anything special, but it was not as bad as it's reputation.

However. Now, listening with headphones, actually paying attention to the pounding in either ear...not the best experience.

I still think people are pretty harsh about it. Rumor has it one guy got stuck making the whole thing and wasn't familiar with the equipment. It's defiantly not up to DS standards, but I think it gives some of the Game Gear titles a run for their money.

Despite the horrible quality and sounds, this is a rare case because it remixes a few songs from both soundtracks of Sonic CD and Sonic 3D Blast. There is also a remix or "Big Arms" from Sonic 3.

Best Song: N'rrgal Colony

Runner-Up (s): Zoah Colony, Nocturne, Metropolis, Ground Zero, Boss Battle, Battle 3, IX Final Boss

This dismal remix of Quartz Quadrant Future (US) does not sound too bad. The limitations seem to actually contribute to the despair. Plus it's not drawn out--unlike most of these it's under three minutes (a benefit in this case).

Worst Song: Main Theme

Runner Up (s): Angel Island, Green Hill, Blue Ridge, Kron Colony, Battle 1, Battle 2, Battle 4, Win, lose, Intro

This is a lot creepier than I remembered. It sounds the pitch really messed up, and the whole thing is like a complication of the typical horrid "Sonic Chronicles Sounds."

Final Ranking: E

First, I don't think this is the worst OST. There's no creepy out of place circus music, at least.

Second, I'm really glad they remixed songs from Sonic CD US/JP and Sonic 3D Blast Gen/Sat, even if it was not under the best conditions. It's balanced between the 4 soundtracks, which is more than I can say for Sonic Mania (with CD).

Third, there was potential.

Unfortunately there are songs that will hurt your ears or just sound off. It's a shame that behind-the-scenes problems affected the soundtrack, but it does not meet Sonic-standards. Or probably any DS game standard.

Sega Superstars Tennis OST Review

Summary

This time the Sega characters have united for one reason: tennis. Makes sense.

Sadly it seems much of the music is just reused, not remixed.

Best Song: Climax

Runner-Up (s): --

Well, I hope this was an original piece and not just some Sega song I don't recognize. Lots of energy.

Worst Song: Main Menu

Runner Up (s): --

Sounds kinda' fun, but lame. Kinda' like a generic version of some Olympic-games song.

Final Ranking: E

It's cool to have Sega music together, because Sega music is cool. But it's mostly just reusing, so...

Sonic Gems Collection OST Review

Summary

Another complication game, this title includes more features. In the case of music, it has new remixes for classic and a few modern songs.

Best Song: 6290 Mix

Runner-Up (s): Sonic Boom D'nB Mix, After 6290 Mix, Are You Brave?, Sonic 3 MegaD Mix, Games, Museum

A mix of the bad futures from the JP Sonic CD OST, this one has energy, effort, and nostalgia.

Worst Song: Open Your Heart MJZ Mix

Runner Up (s): Can You Feel the Sunshine ACID Mix, Living in the City LTN Mix, Manuals

This seems pretty chill, but it goes no where. There is no climax. It just doesn't do the original justice.

Final Ranking: C

Really good for a "collection" game, and the remixes defiantly are worth a listen.

Sega Superstars OST Review

Summary

Made for the PS2 Eyetoy, this game is fairly obscure but known for it's grouping of Sega characters. The music is fun.

Best Song: Options

Runner-Up (s): Results, Game Select, Menu

It sounds like it time travelled to Sonic Rush Adventure This is funky and fun with the voice samples also giving it a happy attitude. Pretty cool just for options.

Worst Song: Credits

Runner Up (s): Intro

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ha. ha. If the intro's "SuperSTARS!!" sounded cheesy, this version is just ridiculous.

Final Ranking: D

Not bad. Deserves some more attention. Not much in the whole scheme of things, though.

Sonic's School House OST Review

Summary

Infamous for being a creepy and horrible game, Sonic's School House has often been called the worst game. Surprisingly the music is not too bad, or at least half isn't.

Best Song: B/D.MID

Runner-Up (s): Heads, Main Theme

This sounds like a beach day.

Worst Song: Credits

Runner Up (s): Report, H, G/Reggae, A/C, Gumballs

What...the...circus music? There are some odd tracks, but this takes the cake.

Final Ranking: E

Well, it was better than I thought it would be. Quality is not bad and some of the music is quite peaceful. Half of it is strange, out of place, and/or weird, though.

Sonic Blast OST Review

Summary

Sonic Blast was not like 3D, instead being more like a generic Sonic and Knuckles.

Best Song: Boss Theme

Runner-Up (s): Final Boss, Silver Castle, Green Hill

This one breaks away from the others. With a steady pace, gives the battle a taste of perseverance.

Worst Song: Character Select

Runner Up (s): Intro, Title, Red Volcano, Blue Marine, Yellow Desert, Ending, Credits

High pitched and annoying.

Final Ranking: E

A few are okay, but it's not very memorable and fairly annoying.

Wacky Worlds Creative Studios OST Review

Summary

In all honesty, Wacky Worlds is not much of a Sonic game. More of a Sega-themed Mario Paint, Sonic and Tails make cameos, and the cursor appears to be Sonic's gloved hand.

Still, that doesn't stop the music from being awesome. Since its a bit on the obscure side, this may very well be the most underrated Sonic-related OST out there.

The game also let you mess around with the music in some mode, but it didn't play on the level then, just in the mode.

As the name suggests, this is a wacky, retro mix. Pretty cool and funky at different points. However, listening it became clear that much of the music is the same/reused but slightly altered. This most obvious with the Sea and Jungle, and the same for some of the haunted planet and house one.

Best Song: Nourie's Wacky Creation

Runner-Up (s): The Sea, The Moon/Space, Haunted/Graveyard, House

I assume this is the music for that creative mode I was talking about. An exchange of an edgy little 16-bit guitar, catchy flute, funky synthesizers, and an interesting percussion type of blend. Kinda' a cheat since it's like a blend of all of them, but still.

Worst Song: Kingdom in the Clouds

Runner Up (s): Jungle...maybe...

Slower, this one tries to sound royal to fit a princess/knight theme. It does that, but at the cost of being bland.

Final Ranking: C

Ah, nostalgia wants me to give this a B. This is a very likeable Genesis addition. However, using such similar songs for such different locations knocks it down to a C.

Sonic Drift OST Review

Summary

Ah, the first Sonic-racing game. While future racing games would gain some attention for their speedy tracks, this one is not remembered for much. There is a "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" mix for the invincibility (technically it's a mix of Green Hills from 8-bit Sonic 2). The result music also sounds the same as the stage clear for most 8-bit Sonic games.

Even though many of the locations are from Sonic 1, the music is new.

Best Song: Spring Yard

Runner-Up (s): Credits

This has got the right spirit. The tempo is just right for a racing game, though there is not much to it.

Worst Song: Marble

Runner Up (s): Labyrinth

Resembling a phone gone bananas, this would sound a lot better on a toy piano.

Final Ranking: E

Annoying, this probably would have been better as an 8-bit version of Sonic 1's music instead.

Sonic Lost World OST Review

Summary

I was not expecting much from Sonic Lost World's soundtrack. The game debuted the mediocre Deadly Six and, from what I've seen, fell into the same mistakes as Sonic Colors

However, this music really caught me by surprise. It was not the cringe-inducing, overly happy/poorly aged mess I was expecting. Not at all.

The small bits of "Colors syndrome" (music that is 100% of the 2010s) was oddly refreshing in songs like Frozen Factory and even with the Color powers. The underwater Yellow Drill, Grey Quake, and Red Burst were all actually pretty cool.

Overall it is much more atmospheric and cinematic than Colors, instead having much more in common with Sonic Unleashed. In fact, musically it's more like a sequel to that game. The locations have an uplifting mix of different instruments that evolve and adopt new themes through the different Zones. I haven't played this game, but the BGM defiantly gives me an idea of what the settings are like. They did not skimp on the dramatic cutscene music, either.

Unfortunately there are no vocal themes, a major problem in this era. The main theme did kinda' grow on me. Happy, explore-y. The Deadly Six theme is powerful but repeated many times in the game, to the point of becoming silly.

Best Song: Windy Hill Zone 2

Runner-Up (s):Sea Bottom Segue (Tropical Coast 3), Windy Hill Zones, Desert Ruins Zones, Silent Forest Zones, Lava Mountain Zone 4, Hidden World, Tornado, Red Burst, Eggman's Secret Weapon

ARE YOU SURE THIS ISN'T WINDMILL ISLE ZONE 2? Ahem. Windy Hill is really beautiful, string-lead piece, and Zone 2 is an enhanced, lovely version of the first. The bongos are a nice touch, as is the gentle guitar in the background.

Worst Song: Tropical Coast Act 1

Runner Up (s): Tropical Coast Zones 2, Sky Road Zones (except 4), Lava Mountain Zones (except 4), Frozen Factory Zone 3s, Sky Road Bonus, Cutscene music with: Master Zik, Who Got Us Into This Mess? Cyan Laser, Black Bomb, Hurry Up!, Reach for the Stars Jingles

The jingle for "Reach For The Stars" is by far the worst song in this game. However, I felt like naming that would be a bit of a cheat since that was only for the 3DS version and the console version was "Sonic Heroes" (a way better choice).

Tropical Coast certainly sounds the part. It seems much too slow, though, and the funky parts mixed in just weigh it down further. Disappointing, especially compared to act 3.

Final Ranking: B

This soundtrack is incredibly rich. It has a lot of atmosphere and depth with layers of beautiful instruments.

However, aside from it's similarity to Sonic Unleashed, it just doesn't have the personality I expect. As stunning as these make the settings, Sonic's edgy/cool attitude seems absent.

Games in the past had a lot of ambience to them, too, but they still added in hints of Sonic's personality. Maybe it's the lack of a main theme, but I find myself wondering if these tracks would easily fit Mario or some other game series.

It's still really good, and some of the tracks have the right idea (Lava Mountain 4, Silent Forest 4, etc). But it feels like is something missing overall.

Regardless, the arrangement is still quite engaging and nothing short of professionalism.

also.

THE MAGIC CONCH.

...

Why is Yoshi in a Sonic game?

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity OST Review

Summary

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity put a futuristic spin on the first games' futuristic spin. Now there was a new gimmick--gravity control--and a new, more sci-fi-ish plot.

The music delivers the atmosphere wonderfully. The first game was a lot of fun, fast, energetic tracks, and it was epic. But this game builds upon the themes of the first, adding a more dramatic mood overall.

The cutscene music is also pretty involved and on par with main games like SA2 and 06.

Best Song: The Core (Mobius Strip)

Runner-Up (s): Through Traffic, Gadget Round, Spiral Madness, Sealed Ground, Dive Into Gravity, Blast Town, Multi-Attack, Options, The Lightless Black, Stop the Black Hole, Meteor Falls, When Robots Attack, Full Speed Ahead

This song really pushes full-speed into the climatic-type of theme. The momentum really gives the Core a dangerous and serious feel, yet it also slows to hint at the mystery of the location. Plus that "elephant" horn or whatever is a LEGEND.

Worst Song: Wish and Hope

Runner Up (s): Babylon Garden, After the Storm

Kind of sad, this cutscene music is not bad, but...I don't know, it reminds me more of Elise (06) than the Rogues.

Best Vocal Song: Catch Me If You Can

Runner-Up (s): Un-Gravitify, Un-Gravitify (Crush 40),

It was such a close battle between "Catch Me If You Can" and "Ungravitify." Both are epic and underrated. Ultimately the edgy instrumentation and spunky vocals were the deicing factor. It takes a different, slower tone than in the first riders, but it sounds so much clearer and more focused. Better.

Worst Vocal Song: Un-Gravitify Electro Extended

Runner Up (s): -____-

I was kinda' expecting the Crush 40 cover to go here, but it was way way way better than I remembered. This blend of the menu music and the title song, "Ungravitify" is awesome, but it's sorta' muted compared to the other songs.

Final Ranking: A

This was an amazing soundtrack to listen to. It's not just a worthy successor to the first game, but improved and more involved.

I really toyed with the idea of giving this OST an S-rank. It's good, but is it the best of the best? I think it's better than the 1st Riders, but it's a close match. I think it's only fair to put it at the same level. Still probably one of the best, though.

Sonic Advanced 3 OST Review

Summary

Sonic Advance 3 was the last Sonic Gameboy game. It was the last Advance game. It was the last title with the original/transitional cast. And technically the last official 2-D game for a while (Rush was "2-D.5"). It doesn't have the same reputation as the Rush series, but the game has its place with fans, and so does the music.

This time around there are three acts and map music. They are remixes of each other, usually increasing with speed. Added in are parts of the previous Advanced games and Sonic Battle, making it, musically, like a combo of all the Sonic-Gameboy titles past.

And more Green Hill remixes. Yay. They're actually good, though. Oh, and a random mix of the Chao races in SA2 serves as the menu music.

Best Song: Cyber Track Act 3

Runner-Up (s):Cyber Track Act 1/2. Chaos Angel 1-3, Sunset Hill 1-3, Bosses/Final/Nonaggression/etc, Twinkle Snow Act 1, Endings, Maps

Cyber Track has got that catchy digital-type theme down pat, but Act 3 also gives it some dramatic anticipation, like an electronic bomb is gonna' go off or something. Or maybe just an alarm clock. But it sounds cool.

Worst Song: Toy Kingdom Act 3

Runner Up (s): Toy Kingdom Act 1/2,  Route 99 Acts 1 & 3, Special Stage, Invincibility, VS 2-7

Toy Kingdom is lively, but but Act 3 it just gets more annoying, not less.

Final Ranking: C

I think the Advance trilogy ends on a high note. It's got that funkiness from battle but isn't overbearing, and it's got the essence of Advance 1/2 as well. It shows how that series' BGM pushed the limits and grew.

Sonic 3D Blast (Sat) Review

Summary

Like Sonic CD, this "classic" game had two soundtracks. In this case, Sonic 3-D Blast received a new soundtrack for its rerelease on the Sega Saturn. Speaking of CD, this OST seems similar to parts of that game. It's as if the JP's love of techno and piano and the US' love of atmosphere and synthesizers fused together.

That's not to say it doesn't have a voice of its own. The tracks are pretty unique. The music adapts to the different settings and acts and builds up as it goes along. Compared to the Genesis version...many of the songs that seemed good on the Genesis, like Diamond Dust and Volcano Valley, seem weaker. But the opposite, for songs like Green Grove and Spring Stadium, is also true.

I've heard the Genesis OST was better. The Genesis version did have some gems, but I have to say this one is superior. Nothing is annoying, and generally it seems like an upgrade.

This time the game also gets a theme, "You're My Hero," which is a cute song. It would really fit Amy Rose, I think, but it's kind of weird to think of it as the Flickies'.

Best Song: Panic Puppet Zone Act 1

Runner-Up (s): Panic Puppet 2 , Gene Gadget 1/2, Rusty Ruin 1/2, Green Grove 1/2, Diamond Dust 1/2, Boss, Final Fight, You're My Hero

because of shadow No, kidding. Panic Puppet is just perfect for an intense final level. It's got a lot of fast energy, similar to something from Sonic Riders. It also slows for a beautiful yet sad piano. The song reflects the robot-filled h-e-double-hockey-sticks you're stuck in, but also that you have to save/protect the birds.

Worst Song: Volcano Valley Act 1

Runner Up (s): Volcano Valley Act 2, Spring Stadium Act 2, Special Stage

I like the song alright. It kind of reminds me of Sonic and the Black Knight. If this were a level with swords or maybe a pirate theme, I wouldn't be calling it the worst. It's a heroic, marchin' through thing, but to me, it just doesn't suit a lava zone.

Final Ranking: A

Impressive, this music gives 3-D Blast cool tracks and an identity. There's little to complain about. This soundtrack is just so much better than the game itself.

Sonic 3 OST Review

Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog 3's OST is perhaps best known for it's input from Michael Jackson. Though he went uncredited for various rumored reasons (MJ didn't like the sound quality, Sega did not like the bad publicity following the allegations against him, etc).

Instead of only one song per zone, Sonic 3 created two similar tracks for each act. Generally Act 1 seems to be a happier introduction while Act 2 is more serious. This game also featured 2 bosses per act, and the soundtrack made the first act's boss into a funky challenge while making the second (with Robotnik) more like a fight to survive.

Best Song: Ice Cap Act 1

Runner-Up (s): Hyrdocity Acts 1/2, Angel Island Acts 1/2, Launch Base Act 1, Special Stage, Final boss, File Select, Competition, Endless Mine

This synth-driven beat runs into such beautiful, icy sounds and effects that add to the ensemble. It perfectly fits the cold setting and has that Sonic-y, speed-though a whole new world feel. Easily the best in the game (with Act 2 at its heals). Arguably one of the best songs in the series.

Worst Song: Marble Garden Act 2

Runner Up (s): Marble Garden Act 1, Carnival Night Act 2, Azure Lake, Balloon Park, Glowball, Slot Machine, Invincible, Credits

This level is boring as heck. As Tails it's okay. But for Sonic it's a lot of running and climbing and weird spinning disks. If only there was some good music to help get through it...seriously.

Act 2 actually tricks you into thinking it might be better than act 1, and then it winds up worse. Harsh and annoying, this isn't complete torture, but close to it. It's basically the Hill Top of Sonic 3.

Final Ranking: C

The OST is mostly good, but overrated. True, the likes of Ice Cap and Hyrdocity are Sonic classics for a reason. But how often do you hear Marble Garden or Azure Lake? Half of these songs are really good and, as hard as it is for me to admit, out do Sonic 2. But the other half is pretty average and falls somewhere below Sonic 1.

Segasonic Cosmo Fighter OST Review

 Summary

Another arcade game exclusive to Japan, similar to previous. Little friendlier?

Best Song: Main/Space/Patrol

Runner-Up (s): rating

A friendly little thing.

Worst Song: Boss/Fighting Eggman Part 2

Runner Up (s): ending

WHAT THE ---- WAS THE MATTER WITH SEGA THAT THEY KEPT USING THIS CREEPY CLOWN MUSIC?!

Final Ranking: E

Not bad, one of the better arcade themes, but there's just not much to it.

Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed OST Review

Summary

Surprisingly, I've heard good things about Transformed. Unfortunately, I don't care too much for this soundtrack.

Firstly, the stages they picked (for Sonic) are BAD choices. Ocean View is Seaside Hill--reminder, Seaside Hill is practically the modern Green Hill. Oddly though, the music is instead a mix of "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" and "Super Sonic Racing" (which actually helps a bit).

Galactic Parade is Starlight Carnival, which is from Sonic Colors. Okay, a starry setting might look nice, but out of all the horrors of Sonic Colors, they could have at least picked Asteroid Coaster or Tropical Resort.

Sky Sanctuary...didn't...wasn't this just in Sonic Generations?! That has to be the most overrated level in Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I love most classic levels. Not that one. It's not the composers fault for the choices, but it in no way helped.

There were also odd choices with the All-Star themes. I have to be honest, this is the best version of "Reach For the Stars" I've heard, but a mix of "His World," "It Doesn't Matter," or maybe "Sonic Boom" would have more ideal (seriously, "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" is in this game at least 3 times, "Sonic Boom" needs love too!). Tails' oddly has the Adventure-Era invincible theme instead of "Believe in Myself" even though Amy and Knuckles get to keep their Adventure themes. While Metal's makes more sense--his theme from Sonic 4--it's a bit too recent for my taste.

There are also random bits from Sonic R, which I assume is because of the composer being the same.

The music is pretty high energy and with techno, dubstep, and a dance-fun feel. At first I kinda' liked it because it reminded me of Sonic Riders, but that quickly drained. The music just gets to be annoying. A lot of the mixes were disappointing, inferior, and/or strange. And some songs defiantly suffer from "Colors Syndrome" (overly 2010s).

Aside from All-Star mixes, the only Sonic-remix that I really like is the modernized version of the Sonic and Knuckles title theme (for Sanctuary Falls). Ocean View was pretty good too, I guess, but I really would have liked "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" mixed with "Sonic Boom" instead because uniting the two would be cool. Plus it always ticks me off seeing the JP OST get more attention.

Some of the "classic" tracks don't sound like they were changed very much (if at all) but, damn it, I love Cosmic Fall.

Best Song: Shadow All-Star Theme

Runner-Up (s): Amy All-Star, Eggman All-Star, Metal Sonic All-Star, Egg Hanger, Roulette Road, Shibuya Downtown, Outrun Bay+intro, Adder's Lair+intro, Dream Valley+intro, Carrier Zone+intro, Ocean View+intro, Grafiti City, Sanctuary Falls intro

oh, finally something that isn't complete sh--Thankfully it's hard to kill music from Shadow the Hedgehog. This remix is the theme for Super Shadow in the game, which includes parts of "Live and Learn" in addition to "I Am...All of Me." When you combine two of the best and edgiest songs of the series, nothing can go wrong.

Worst Song: Galactic Parade Intro

Runner Up (s): Dragon Canyon, Temple Trouble+intro, Chilly Castle+intro, Race of Ages+intro, Grave Yard Dig, Galactic Parade, Sanctuary Falls, Graffiti City intro, Seasonal Shrines intro, Rogues Landing intro, Burning Depths intro, Mii All-Star, Alex Kidd All-Star, Results

OHNONOTSONICCOLORS Ouch! I like the Galactic Parade one a bit better than the original since it has a pretty piano, but this annoying intro is from the "Mario" section (stage Map) and is barely changed. I can't tell if it's gotten better or worse, but, boy is it irritating.

Final Ranking: D

This is the first "modern" (good quality) game that I've considered E-Ranking. As a Sonic fan, it's pretty disappointing. However, as a Sega fan I think it has more potential. Someone who grew up playing on a Dreamcast or even a Saturn or a Genesis will be able to hear nostalgic tunes in a catchy, modern form. This doesn't work for Sonic, though, because this series was lucky enough to have modernized songs already, and compared to the likes of Sonic Generations this is mostly trash.

Sonic Rivals 2 OST Review

Summary

Sonic Rivals 2 makes for an interesting listen. Like the first game, there are heavy guitars yet funky effects and clips.

In this one the sampling and references become more apparent. Mystic Haunt Act 3, for example, has some of Death Ruins (from Shadow). There seems to be lots of bits from Riders and other games (apparently ones other than Sonic as well). Also, there are remixes from the first game.

In addition, this game gets its own energetic theme, "Race to Win."

Best Song: Final Boss (Ifrit)

Runner-Up (s): Chaotic Inferno Acts 1-3, Mystic Haunt Act 1-3, Sunset Forest Act 3, Tension, Blue Coast Act 1 (Race to Win)

Quite dramatic, this boss remix really makes combines the themes in the best way. Fast, edgy energy with some wackier sounds and some climatic background vocals. And there seems to be a bit of Mystic Mansion (Heroes), too!

Worst Song: Neon Palace Act 2

Runner Up (s): Neon Palace Act 1, Frontier Canyon Act 1-2, Happy, Confrontation, Win, Lose

These casino ones are a bit different from the style of the rest. Goes for a Vegas vibe, very jazzy and funky. This one is a bit much for what it is.

Final Ranking: C

The music is good, yet not as impactful. I hate to say it, but it can get boring. Still, it's worth listening to--deserves far more attention than it gets. It has some magnificent moments, and "Race to Win" is just a Sonic classic.

Sonic Heroes OST Review

Summary

Sonic Heroes was a game with many characters. Four teams played through variations of the same stages...which could get dull. Luckily the music is awesome.

The game embraces rock while also jazzing things up with a more electronic feel. Generally the songs are fun and active, with some that are more peaceful or edgy.

It's not all perfect though. "Sonic Heroes" and bits of the song are used so much in the game that it gets extremely repetitive and almost annoying (which is a shame because the full song is a legend). "We Can" is fun but pretty much just "It Doesn't Matter" but rewritten for this game. Some of the stage music is unforgettable, and others are tiresome or easily overshadowed.

"Seaside Hill" and "Seaside Gate" are easily among the worst--maybe it's because Seaside Hill has been overused (like greenhill) but Bingo Highway's music has been used pretty often and I've yet to grow sick of it.

Best Song: Bullet Station

Runner-Up (s): Bingo Highway, Hang Castle, Mystic Mansion, Egg Albatross, Rail Canyon, Egg Hawk, Grand Metropolis, Power Plant, Frog Forest, Robot Carnival, Events, Casio Area

I was really thinking Bingo Highway would take this honor, but Bullet Station turns out to be a bit greater. It's an edgy, guitar driven piece with a lot of power and energy. It transforms into something epic.

Worst Song: Excuse Me (Event)

Runner Up (s): Invincibility, Seaside Hill, Seaside Gate, Lost Jungle, Egg Fleet, Egg Emperor, City Area, Sea Area, Quick Race, Ring Race, Title

A silly and strange thing. Most of the event music was cool, but this is an oddball.

Best Vocal Song: This Machine

Runner-Up (s): What I'm Made Of, Team Chaotix

Ah, again. I was really expecting "What I'm Made Of" to be the "best." It's still awesome. But the cooler-toned "This Machine" ends up beating it out. It's so dramatic, powerful, and kinda' mysterious, so it's perfectly ideal for Team Dark.

Worst Vocal Song: Follow Me

Runner Up (s): We Can, Sonic Heroes (opening version)

This was easily the worst. Not that it's really bad, it's a cute song for Amy. Lyrics are less bizarre than "My Sweet Passion," but its got that girly, playful spirit. Still, the "follow me in my dreams" thing make me think of Amy's crazy fantasies like in Sonic X when she dreamt about chasing Sonic on the beach.

But, uh, Team Rose isn't just Amy, it's Amy, Cream and Big.  It's a bit of stretch for Cream. But Big? NO. No no no. It's weird enough that he's a "slow" 18 year old hanging out with two young girls. But him having a girly song possibly about him liking Froggy in some kinda' romantic way? NO.

Final Ranking: C

The entire collection is a mix of pure Sonic-energy. But it is also a collection of opposites: it has some of the most memorable stage music, and some of the most easily forgotten; some songs never grow old, others become dull by the 4th listen; some of the vocal themes are grand, and others are second-rate. In the whole scheme of things, though, I think Sonic Heroes' soundtrack is underrated.

Sonic Mega Collection/SMC Plus OST Review

  Summary

The music is really able to play on the nostalgia vibe while still being original. Except of the credits, the music is the same for Plus.

Best Song: Manuals Theme

Runner-Up (s): Title, Intro, Main Menu, Credits (plus)

While all of the songs are made of nice combos, this particular one has a bit more of a dramatic part and sounds like it could be a Robotnik/Eggman base or something. Pretty cool.

Worst Song: Credits (original)

Runner Up (s): Options/extras

It's kind of weird compared to the other ones. Not especially bad, but out of place.

Final Ranking: D

Generally good, but boring. These themes were mostly created for looking at things or scrolling through possibilities, and it does a great job. It seems lamer, though, on its own.

Sonic 3D Blast (Gen) OST Review

Summary

Sonic 3D Blast...ouch. Did not have a blast with 3D blast. Wanted to blast every single flickie to pieces. Especially the fat green one. As such, I did not have a good memory of this game's stages or music.

However, the music is a lot better than I remembered. For the most part. It's a divide between beautiful creations that seem ahead of their time, and torturous ones.

Best Song: Volcano Valley Act 1

Runner-Up (s): Rusty Ruins Acts 1/2, Gene Gadet Acts 1/2, Diamond Dust Act 1, Volcano Valley Act 2, Panic Puppet Act 1, Boss 1, Final Fight

There is a lot going on. It's a mix that's just addicting, amid drums and effects that give the level such a heated vibe. It's a quieter piece yet has its speed.

Worst Song: Opening

Runner Up (s): Spring Stadium Acts 1/2, Green Grove Acts 1/2, Special Stage, Menu, Staff Roll, Invincible, Ending

And I thought Green Grove was cringe! There are cool drums that are immediately followed by some of the worst sounds in the series. All with a happy yet trippy mood.

Final Ranking: B

This is one of the best Genesis soundtracks. A lot of the songs sound just right, not limited or poor quality--hard to believe this was a 16-bit era soundtrack. And yet...there are cringe-worthy, loud, awful outliners that ruin the experience.

Sonic Spinball GG OST Review

 Summary

Sonic Spinball, like many games of the time, had a Game Gear release. This version, aside from the title, has different music.

While these 8-bit titles aren't as well-known, sometimes they can be pretty snappy. In other cases, horrendous. I'd have to say this is someplace in between: it gets the job done, but it just seems lame compared to the Genesis version.

Best Song: The Machine

Runner-Up (s): Toxic Pools, Lava Power House, Title

This one is nice. It's got some mechanical-like influences, but in this version it's more of an extra/background thing and secondary to the main melody. I like the console version, but this might be the better.

Worst Song: Bonus Level

Runner Up (s): Final Showdown, Level Start

Kind of an oddball, this one is wacky and at the same time repetitive. Weird and not memorable.

Final Ranking: D

It's not really bad, but forgettable.

Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball OST Review

Summary

I remembered the music of Sonic Spinball pretty fondly and was shocked to see it has a bit of a bad rep...because of the options music. I'll explain that more below...

As for the OST as a whole, it's pretty awesome. It shifts from funky to intense and sharp/mechanical to deep/steady in a heartbeat. The quality us not as good as I remembered though (I assume Sonic Boom or Virtual Sonic or even Sonic Generations is to blame...everyone loves Toxic Caves).

Best Song: Showdown

Runner-Up (s): Toxic Caves, Laval Powerhouse, The Machine, Boss, Game Over, Title Theme, Intro

I had a really tough time deciding between Toxic Caves, Lava Powerhouse, and Showdown. Ultimately, though, Showdown is like an epic combination of all the prior levels. It's incredibly catchy like Toxic Caves, threatening like Lava Powerhouse, and robotic like The Machine.

Worst Song: Options

Runner Up (s): Sega!

Honestly compared to Sonic Eraser, it's not too bad. But while it's slightly catchy in the beginning, it gets progressively worse. It's loud, harsh, and IF YOU WANT TO USE THE LEVEL SELECT CHEAT...

Final Ranking: B

Sonic Spinball is a unique, snazzy combination that makes it another memorable Genesis title. It does have one that just sounds off, but the rest is pretty underrated.
